Porphyra Roleplaying Game

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

In June of 2015, Purple Duck Games published Drow of Porphyra - Karza, Children of the Loomqueen by Patricia Willenborg without the Pathfinder Compatibility License. This products explore some mature themes that were appropriate for the content of the product and for our Lands of Porphyra Campaign Setting but not for the compatibility license.

As 2015 progressed, we released more supplements using open game content from the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game but abandoned our claims of official compatibility as we actively worked to change some minor aspects of the game both in our products and at my gaming table. Now with the recent announcement of what is generally being referred to as Pathfinder 2.0, we have decided to formalize our work as the Porphyra Roleplaying Game.

March 25/2018 - Initial definitions posted.

July 15/2019 - The penultimate version of the document is now posted. I need a few more pieces of art but the book is basically done.

- Mark Gedak, Purple Duck Games

So basically you can use this book and pfrpg 1e back and forth with minimal effort? So if I want to bring other classes to it, or take away some of the classes in the book to other campaigns, it should be seemless? I am asking this because I might just use classes and spells from PFRPG but use rulesets from porphyra roleplaying game. 3PP, like, Spheres series should be work with PRG, amirite?

It is not intended to be seamless. If it were seamless then there wouldn't need to be a different book. Feats and magic have changed in their structure. Currently in my home campaign we use the Porphyra Roleplaying Game rules and run adventures from Paizo's adventure paths with some modification on the fly. Classes NPCs create the most problem for me as a DM with these conversion/uses at higher levels, but sometimes... secretly... behind the DM screen I just ignore some of the differences (like I don't have rangers in this book but Paizo's products are littled with them. I still remember how a ranger works so I just let it be) and play on.

I see. I would likewise ignore some of the differences. Maybe have to go through converting old 3pp classes then. Anyway thanks for answering! One last thing are the classes backward compatible?

I would think they are backward compatible-ish.

BAB, Fort, Ref, Will - unchanged
Feats - scaled in Porphyra, so going back they would just be unscaled as normal
Spell - casting some choices would need to be made about spell-lists
Class Abilities - largely the same
Skills - we mushed some together and added a couple new ones

Has anyone created a Conversion Guide for this? Or some other way to help catch differences?

There was not a conversion guide created. But you could contact the author at purpleduckgames@gmail.com and he could offer some insights I am sure.

I agree. However, I have no idea why the preview is not rendering. It is set-up to render like all my other files.

Can you update the preview, it only shows the cover of the book.

I'm mostly curious as to how it differs from the Classic campaign setting guide.

According to the setting it should be able to show you a quick preview of all 1-605 pages. But I agree it is not working.

This book is not designed to update the Class Campaign Setting Guide.

It is designed to update the first edition Pathfinder engine to a revised version. Since Pathfinder has moved one to version 2. We still want to play something like Pathfinder 1 when we are in Porphyra. So this book (and the ever expanding wiki) is designed to by our version of the original Pathfinder rules.

The Campaign Setting is largely unchanged except where we excised concepts like alignment.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as written, the Eldritch Knight's captstone(lvl 20) class feature(Armored Spellcaster) does nothing.

It says it negates the ACP from armor to caster checks...but since the EK is proficient with all types of armor he doesn't take the ACP to caster checks in the first place.

Caster checks in general seem to be somewhat weird, since they cover so many different activities now(casting defensively, maintaining concentration, hitting with spells, beating spell resistance etc.), but feats/features often grant blanket bonuses to all caster checks(instead of specific ones to certain activities involving caster checks) even when this would make no sense(Shielded Caster gives you +4 to hit with spells when a teammate covers you, but it's obviously intended to aid defensive casting) or contradict the description(like Combat Casting).

You are not in error. I have an error on p.184; proficiency never removes the armor check penalty from caster checks.

Caster checks are meant to be our catch-all. If you are casting a spell you make a caster check instead of an attack roll. This streamlines things a bit because you can roll once and apply it to multiple things (like AC, SR, and concentration checks if need be).

We have also tried to remove some of the "conditionality" of some abilities. So we hope to see like of the +2 bonus when fighting under a full month on the 3rd week of the month type abilities.

That said, as always, the game is your game and The Most Important Rule (p.3) always applies.

I'm going to add the ACP question to my errata document. Thanks.

Can you provide a summary of what you have changed compared to Pathfinder? I'm interested in Porphyra, and would like to know how it's different, and how it's incompatible with 3.PF.

I am talking about our changes to the game over at: https://www.porphyraroleplayinggame.com/

I am adding bits of updates on an ongoing basis. We are still in playtest so not all the changes are final right now.

Hi Tammy!

I've seen that site, yes, but I was hoping for something condensed, something like the Pathfinder conversion guide that you're probably familiar with. Or are you more focusing on making changes rather than making a nice tidy changelog?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't think we do anything in a "tidy" fashion but I can put up a changelist on the site. Give me 20 minutes.

Thanks again, especially for your quick turnaround at what is, for me, a very late hour. :)

I received a notification that there was an update, but I already have version 13. Should there be a version 14? Or did version 13 get updated to a new version 13 (effectively making it version 13.1)?

Not a this time. Currently, the damage dealing is handled by the Fighter and the tanking is handled by the Stalwart Defender.

The unchained barbarian is my favorite version of the barbarian so far and will probably be directly uploaded to the Porphyra Rpg wiki.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
