Heart: The City Beneath is a tabletop roleplaying game about delving into a nightmare undercity that will give you everything you’ve ever dreamed of – or kill you in the process.

It is a dungeon-crawling, story-forward tabletop RPG from the designers of Spire that focuses on what characters have to lose in pursuit of their dreams in the chaotic darkness beneath the world.

Sharing a setting with Spire, Heart expands the unreal world beneath it. It uses an expanded and updated version of the Resistance system, the mechanics that power Spire, to help you tell stories of desperation, hubris and adventure in the City Beneath.

The Heart quickstart provides you with basic rules, a selection of pre-generated characters and the introductory scenario "Drowned".

We started the game, explained the awesome theme and mechanics, but when I got to the Lines and Veils, no one could agree on topics that everyone felt comfortable with. I tried to explain how there are no racial advantages and that I’d follow the book and use non-gendered pronouns, and my players voted to play something else instead. I thought I was being inclusive, what am I doing wrong?

Might be your group dont do horror games. Period.

I´d never use non-gendered pronouns or even bring up the topic unless the players made it a topic do discuss. Why bother. I might have a group whre we just say if we are uncomfortable with a topic and move on. The authors even cover that by writing

"PRONOUNS: We use masculine, feminine, and non-gendered pronouns throughout this game."

There are no mechanical advatages to playing a race. But flavor- and RP-wise there are tons. You and your players make the table rules not the book. Heck, I play Forbidden lands with my group and racial (specist) tension come up all the time.

The lore in the book even describes that Gnolls arn´t allowed in the city above and they are at war with the Aelfir. Even though it´s not a major theme your players might have a backstory where they hate all elf because of X,Y and Z.

Hi! This seems really cool, but I have a question:

Several pieces of equipment have the 'brutal' tag. But it's missing from the list of tag descriptions. Is it the same as 'potent' or something else?

Hi Ralf,

Yep - it's the same as the Potent tag, apologies for that. We're going to upload a corrected version soon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
