For five millenia the Council of Immortals maintained order, but when mortals slew one of The Fourteen, the Council disbanded in outrage. It has been replaced by armed camps of deities and their worshippers, and a terrible war looms on the horizon. The fates of both men and gods are now in the hands of a bold few who must risk everything if they are to save their world.

The Orb provides players with all of the following and much more:

  • A complete, Fudge-powered, fantasy roleplaying game;
  • A character creation process that builds heroes, not novices;
  • A fast, detailed, and deadly combat system;
  • Powerful and flexible mechanics for magic and miracles;
  • An exciting setting filled with fascinating cultures and places of wonder to explore;
  • 100+ pieces of evocative, full-color, fantasy artwork;
  • Beautiful maps of Arabor and Brithos.

Whether you are a fan of Fudge or an aficionado of fantasy roleplay, The Orb should be on your bookshelf.

Hi Peter!

I am working with Premiere to address a formatting issue that is preventing me from uploading a new document for POD. Once they have helped me figure out the problem, I'll order a proof copy. If all goes well, it should be back up and available for POD in a month or so.

My apologies for the inconvenience,

John

Hi Peter,

I just approved the POD after receiving and reviewing the proof. It should be available in a day or three.

All the best,

John

This rpg is becoming a favorite. I am creating a solo rpg type game, and this rpg will be my base. I might do a review on my YouTube channel. Have you worked on creating any adventures for it yet?

Donald, thank you for the kind words! I am working on a set of scenarios that form what I am tentatively calling The Brithos Campaign (Not very catchy, I know.). I have four adventures written and at least another four to go. Not sure if they'll be published anytime soon, but I have been playing through them with my gaming group as I write them. The adventures begin before the death of Bayus and lead up to that cataclysmic event.

If you end up doing a review, I'd love to see it. If you have suggestions or want to bounce ideas around, just shoot me an email.

All the best,

John

Hi John,
could you tell us a bit more about the setting you created. In what way is it peculiar and differs from other fantasy settings?
What cultures have you used to base your nations on? What is the unique selling point of your world?

Hello!

Those are some sizable questions.

There are numerous analogues on The Orb—medieval England/France, ancient Sparta and Egypt, Viking Scandinavia, Dark Age Ireland, and more. However, these are very liberal interpretations. There are also cultures that are very different, such as the bargemen of Lake Corazos and the ghoul-infestedrealm of Thalos.

What makes it unique? The characters actions matter. The Orb is on the brink on disaster, and unless heroes intervene, their gods will lead them into a war that results in millions of casualties.

Please ignore my repeated, initial attempts to respond. I was on a tablet, and it was giving me one heck of a time.

What cultures will you recognize? Many of the nations of The Orb are based upon Earth's cultures from the distant past, but these are VERY liberal interpretations with elements that have nothing to do with our own history. There are locations that will remind you of ancient Egypt and Sparta, Viking Age Scandinavia, Dark Ages Ireland, Medieval England or France, Feudal Japan, and more. You will also discover Thalos the Accursed, whose people were transformed into ravenous ghouls for their depravity, and the Bargemen of Lake Corazos, who will never forgive a long-dead King of Kyphan for his betrayal.

So what is unique? Great question. Frankly, I have no idea what is entirely unique at this point with so many games and works of fantasy fiction on the market, but here are a few bits that are definitely different:

I bought the PDF and really like how gameable the setting is. The analogues help you visualise the cultures and the background and pantheon of gods give you a lot to work with as a GM.

Hi All!

I have posted a video (amateurish and shot at my kitchen counter) that shows you the premium color, hardback edition that will be available in the next day or two. I think it is important to show you in advance what you will be getting for your hard-earned cash.

Happy gaming!

John,
In chapter 9, on the gods of The Orb, there is a lot of text that is hidden by the images on those pages. It maybe that way on other pages as well. The text isn't wrapping around the images. The images are over the text and obscured. Some PDF clients can see the text if you highlight it. Others cannot.

Yikes! It seems that I set the PDF to comply with a more universal format and ended up with issues I hadn't seen previously. Please try the new PDF I am posting. My apologies.

Hello. As the sole writer-editor-publisher, all of the fault for anything you dislike in this publication is mine. A couple of quick things:

1. There is no "layered" version for printing more economically. However, the document is not password locked, so feel free to remove images, etc.
2. I will be considering the viability of print-on-demand should there be sufficient interest.
3. If you find glaring errors, please let me know. I will make updates as time permits.
4. I truly hope you enjoy this game. It really is a labor of love and a way for me to promote two meaningful charities.

Happy gaming!

John

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
