The Crying Blades Houserules

Volume One
Characters and Rules

The Crying Blades Houserules is an OSR fantasy roleplaying game, built on the foundation of the tradition and with a few innovations and twists. It was inspired mostly by Lamentations of the Flame Princess and by Swords & Wizardry, but many other games also had a significant influence on the design, from WhiteHack to BlackHack, from Dungeon World to Fate.

Note: this is an updated version of the manual, fully edited and revised (as of December 2022). The game is no longer in Beta version, this is the final version.

This is the first in a series of three volumes, which will compose the full game: one - characters and rules; two - sorcery and blessings; three - monsters and adventures.

This first manual contains: an Introduction, the Characters creation rules and the four available classes (Fighter, Cleric, Sorcerer, Rogue), the Equipment, all basic and advanced rules and rules for combat, rules for Sorcerers and Clerics and their magic. The spells and blessings lists are limited in this manual to level one spells only (for character creation).

A second manual, Sorcery & Blessings, contains the full list of spells, with details.

What will you find in the game

The game introduces a few innovations, such as a random talents system for the various classes that replaces abilities, three different equipment-systems (one based on a die size, one on numbered slots, and a traditional one with weight-per-item).

It uses regular attributes checks for actions, and Saving Throws linked to attributes, with some class-modifiers.

Combat is faster than usual: a single d20 roll determines (using the traditional AAC) both if the character hits the monster, and if the monster hits the character. This reduces the number of rounds where both would miss.

Sorcery and clerical blessings do not require to memorize spells but use a simple count to determine how many can be cast per day.

The leveling up system is simple and all classes need the same amount of XP per level. Sorcerers and Clerics, though, need to pay XP to improve their power-matrix and to acquire new spells, thus their leveling-up process is slower. Multiclassing is allowed, but severely limited.

I'm curious if there's been any progress on the BETA of this or if volume 3 is forthcoming soon.

Hey, thanks for the interest. Unfortunately many things in real life got in the way and I never went past an ugly draft with book 3. I am sorry to say that I don't see it coming together any time soon - perhaps never :-(

You mis-spelled 'foundation' in most of your project blurbs.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
