Schloss von Nachtherz

Deep in the pine forest, high in the hills, sits Schloss von Nachtherz, the ancestral castle home of the von Nachtherz family. For centuries the family ruled from the stronghold, treating people fairly and justly. That all changed when Dietmar became Count von Nachtherz. The castle doors were closed, the windows bricked up, and messages stopped coming down from the castle. Locals spoke of strange sounds and lights coming from the castle, and began to stay away from the surrounding forests. But that's when the disappearances began. Rumours abounded; the Count was sick with plague, the mansion was haunted, the Count was cruel. But one word was repeated again and again in the hushed taverns near Schloss von Nachtherz : Vampire!

A printable rpg battlemap compatible with any RPG/Dungeon-Crawl or skirmish game. Use as a standalone gameboard, or combine with any same-scale tileset. The map is 50x50, equivalent to 25 of our standard 10x10 tiles.

Contents: A large Gothic castle in a dark and creepy forest. The castle belongs to a Vampire, and is eerily lit with torches. Rooms include a crypt, great hall, bedrooms and parlour, library, dining hall and long corridors. Perfect for Halloween adventures, where it could also be a haunted house, a murder mystery setting, or just the home of a sinister noble.

Download includes:
250dpi A4 pdf map spread across 50 pages for easy printing.
250dpi full jpeg versions for VTT or poster printing
72dpi VTT ready jpegs (140px, less than 10mb)

Note: Whilst the download looks large, it consists of many separate files - just download the versions you need.

Go on an adventure!

I hope that they eventually get around to optimizing this for Virtual Tabletops as this map is almost an insult in how good it is, easily one of the best maps that Heroic Maps have ever made in my opinion. Unfortunately it seemed to be made at a time where they didn't really cater to Virtual Tabletops and the product massively suffers from that, it is phrased as a good thing but that is merely marketing magic as far as I am concerned.

Castle maps are probably the most valuable type of maps for DMs overall, and good ones like this are very hard to find.

EDIT: As I've just learned the map is actually too large for most online compressors to be able to correct the issue, which means that there's a good chance that you're gonna throw your money away if you end up buying this. Huge missed opportunity.

Hi there,

You're right that we produced that map long before we offered VTT formats as standard (back when VTT was nowhere near as popular as now!)

We've added a new set of files - VTT ready jpegs of both the grid and no grid versions, less than 10mb, 72dpi and 140px per square.

Hope that's useful!

I'm curious, can you edit layers in this map? I'm thinking of getting this but I would redo it for something completely different.

Hi there,
No, there are no layers on this map. The formats are flattened pdf or jpegs

Hi folks,

In attempting to download "", I keep getting a second copy of the Grid_Brightened version. Is it possible to check if the right files are uploaded/named correctly? Could be a fault at my end.

Hi there. I've double checked the file and it all looks ok. Try downloading it again. Let me know if you still don't have any luck

Thanks for the comments, and sharing tips with other customers. Of course, it is meant to be night time ;) . Anyway, we've also updated the product with brightened jpeg versions of the map, to save you doing it yourself if you would like it brighter for your games. Hope that's useful.

Okie Dokie, I just took the Full Sized Preview, brought the Overview up to 800%, took a snapshot (Edit menu) and saved it as a JPG with Paint. Then I opened it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, and hit Auto Correct (up near Edit Picture) and Boy, Oh Boy did it brighten up!
You might want to try something like that.

I have to wait for payday, (I know, I'll miss the Sale!) but I'm getting this and a bunch more maps! You guys are the best!

I have always enjoyed the look, richness and tone of Heroic Maps. However, I have to say that they seem to be getting darker and darker. My players are starting to complain that they can't tell what they're looking at. It's is perhaps a matter of contrast? As the maps get darker, the pallet of colors seems to be shrinking.

Hi Andrew. If you're printing them the ink and paper type can affect how dark things appear. You could try using something like Gimp or Photoshop to increase the brightness if you're finding they aren't printing the way you like.

Thank you for the swift response Joseph, it speaks to the diligence of your company. I actually use them on VTT sites as jpg or png files. I have used GIMP for these files to bring up the brightness, however my results are inconsistent and I do frankly find it bothersome to add works on to my schedule to make a purchased product usable.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
