A game for children who love adventures

The best stories are the ones you make up with your children.

That’s the thought behind Amazing Tales, a story making game of roleplay and imagination for children who are old enough to have adventures.* With the very simple Amazing Tales rules to guide you  you and your child can make up stories together, rolling dice to add drama and excitement for everyone

“I played Amazing Tales across Australia and New Zealand over the past 3+ weeks with my 10 year old daughter, Poesy, as we traveled the region on my book-tour; it was a huge smash hit (indeed, I often had to call it off when I was getting tired because Poesy never wanted to stop).” - Cory Doctorow

In the book you will find

1. The short and simple Amazing Tales rules. So simple a four year old will be able to explain them back to you. Flexible enough to cope with the most imaginative requests

2. Advice on creating Amazing Tales with your child. Including plenty of advice for parents new to roleplaying, with advice on the specific challenges of making up stories that work for kids, different ways of handling fights in children’s games and ways to keep magic magic.

3. Four sample settings for Amazing Tales, each with suggested characters and skills, tips for story tellers and ten story seeds – ideas just waiting to become Amazing Tales. Take a look at the four settings below.

The Deep Dark WoodAdventure beyond the starsMagical Kingdoms Long AgoThe Pirate Seas

Perfect for playing with kids

Amazing Tales can be played with a single six sided dice. But a set of four dice with six, eight, ten and twelve sides are recommended.

Amazing Tales was written to be played sitting at a table, curled up on a sofa or snuggled up in bed by a parent and one or two children.

Amazing Tales lets your children make up any kind of character they want, such as aliens, robots, dinosaurs, fairies, knights, cowboys or superheroes. Amazing Tales was also designed to require no preparation on the parent’s side. If your children are in the mood for a game you can grab the dice and get started.

The 96 page hardback book features 28 pages of full colour illustrations and is embellished with black and white line drawings throughout. Perfect for sharing with adventurous children to inspire their adventures.

Hi, does this include options for character hindrances and/or drawbacks? Or for character development, or for characters with different power and/or experience levels?

Hi, I saw there is a revised edition with 104 pages adding some extra tips. For the description I understand this is not (96 page). Where can I find it? Thanks

One of the things my 8 year old loves about pirates is that frequently when they were "stealing property" they were freeing slaves. Is there any chance of adding a historical fantasy adventure where we can do some slave freeing? (After all, friendship is the greatest treasure.)

I love it, I play it with my two boys all the time, I can't say enough good things about it. If you want your kids to develop a fantastic detail oriented imagination and good understanding of game mechanics I highly recommend this entire series of Amazing Tales books and hand outs. Fantastic work!

Hi, I've just purchased this PDF, and while it looks beautiful, it looks a little taxing on my printer toner.

Is it possible to get a more printer-friendly, black and white, version of the rule book?

Thank you!

Not trying to be smart annoying person but my printer has an option where I can print only in black and white, or grayscale. Maybe try that option and see how it works for you.

That is an option that my printer has, but then there is a gray background instead of brown. It's still a lot of ink.

Some PDFs here have a printer-friendly option. I downloaded this the other day and actually came today to see if I could find that.

This should be resolved now. If you download the latest PDF and open the layers tab you'll find an option to turn off the background for easier printing.

Can layers only be removed with the paid version of Adobe? I'm looking at the layers tab, but it says there's only "Layer 1" and I don't have permission to do anything with it. I downloaded the revised version today, and that's what I'm getting.

I just purchased this tonight and one of the pages does not print correctly. (The page with dice prints with a giant black box covering the text despite appearing normal in the print previews.) Am I the only one with this issue? Is there a remedy?

I ordered the PDF and liked it enough to order the hardcover. When my book arrived it had a short (15-page) children's story bound in the front that had nothing to do with the content of Amazing Tales. Is this intentional or was it some kind of printing error?

If the PDF format was purchased, can it be downloaded to more than one computer or device? I ordered the standard hardcover as well as the PDF for my 5 yr. old & 10 yr. old's Christmas. The website said the hardcover likely won't arrive by Christmas, so I'm curious if I'd be able to download the PDF on multiple devices like their tablets and a computer?

Recommended is D6, D8, D10 and D12. But there is a variant in the rules that needs only a D6.

Purchaser here, and love the game. But is there any way you could post the story / character sheets without the brown background, perhaps as a download on your site?

The shading eats up a lot of ink I'd rather fill with adventure doodles.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. I'm wondering if a parent that has never done rpg could figure out how to do this with their kids? (Does it explain how to play an RPG game, or is that background knowledge expected?) Also, I don't understand the difference between the various versions. If I get the "watermark version" will I be able to play it?

A PDF is a digital copy. If you get the watermarked PDF of course you can play the game, but you will not get a physical book, you will have to read the PDF on a computer, phone, or tablet.

"Watermarked" just means they're going to put something like your customer name and an order number in a corner of each page. It doesn't affect readability; they plan for this when laying them out. It's just so that if someone pirates the game, they can figure out who did it.

How to run and play an RPG is both very simple and instinctive for most people once they try, and also a little difficult to explain. You could watch videos of some people playing RPGs on youtube or the like (Critical Role is extremely popular) if you read the book and still aren't sure what to do. No prior knowledge is necessary, though, and this game is very entry-level.

Hi Eric,

I worked hard to try and make the game accessible for parents who haven't played RPGs before. I hope I succeeded. And there are videos on the Amazing Tales youtube channel to show how the game goes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
