The Adventure Crafter

Create adventure outlines, seeds, events, or complete narratives for any RPG, in advance or on the spot!

The Adventure Crafter adds to the Crafter series of Game Master tools a system for randomly generating an unfolding story that you can use as the framework for a custom built adventure or for solo role-play.

Using a system of randomly generated story tropes, combined with character and storyline management and creative interpretation, the Adventure Crafter can create the structure for an entire adventure, an idea for an adventure that you can develop, an opening scene to get you started, or it can be used as a tool to generate inspiration for your own adventures.

Unlimited worlds of adventure await!

Why is the PDF watermarked? I would like to be able to print a few of the tables and the like so that I don't have to ruin the book printing them The others don't have that label

Will there be an option for Softcover with Standard color? I can see it in all GME products, but not in Crafter.

You're right, it would be good to have that option. I'll add to my production schedule to expand the POD options available.

I'm assuming this is used alongside the GME, but since assuming things often leads to trouble, I figured I should verify.
Are all of these products (GME, Adventure Crafter, Location Crafter) made to be used in conjunction?

Hi Craig, I'm glad you asked! The Adventure Crafter is a standalone product, it is not meant to be used with the GME or the other Crafter books.

You can use it with the GME or the other Crafter books but it is not specifically designed for that. All of the Crafter books are written this way, each as a standalone product to be used with any game.

Form fillable PDFs are now available for the Adventure Sheet and the Lists. They can be downloaded off of the Word Mill Games site (link on this page under Publisher Website). Go to The Adventure Crafter page, and on the left you'll see a sidebar for Downloadable Content. The form fillable PDFs are at the bottom.

Curious of whether this will be of use to the solo gamer. The description on the tin seems to indicate utility for the traditional GM. Thanks in advance!

As you discovered, yes :) If you use Mythic, The Adventure Crafter can be combined with it to replace some of Mythic's mechanics. You can also use TAC on its own as a solo tool. It creates more detailed adventure events than Mythic, but at the cost of being slower. This limits its use somewhat for using it running a GM-less game, but it works well with a solo game if you're fine taking the time.

The copy I got looks distinctively different than the sample, the images are missing and some of the fonts are weird.

Hmm, that's the first report I've heard of an issue like that. Can you send me a screenshot of how it appears on your screen, please. Does it look strange only on screen, or does it also print like that?

I have the same issue. If I send it to Dropbox and view it using the Dropbox app on my iPad, it looks fine. But if I direct download it or export it from the Dropbox app, it’s missing all images and has font issues.

Works fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader on my iPad as well. It appears to only be a problem when using an application that defaults to iOS’s PDF renderer. It’s strange because I also purchased The Location Crafter, and it doesn’t have the issue.

I'm sorry for the difficulties. When I uploaded a corrected PDF, I also optimized the file more to make it a smaller file. I suspect that tweaked some aspect of the PDF to make it less friendly to some renderers. I'll upload another version with less strict optimization. Hopefully that'll resolve the issue. If not, please let me know, and I'll go back to the original, larger file.

I did a little research, and it looks like Apple's PDF renderer used on the iPad and for Preview on macOS is a big pile of garbage. I was able to get it to work using Apple's renderer by opening the file in Acrobat DC and resaving it as an optimized PDF but with Acrobat 5.0 or later compatibility. I tried Acrobat 6.0 or later compatibility, and while it did look better, it was still having some font issues and several (but not all) images were missing. Using Acrobat 5.0 or later compatibility fixed all issues. Hope this helps!

Would it be possible to watch or read a demonstration of putting The Adventure Crafter through its process without giving away the entire book?

How does an adventure play when using The Adventure Crafter? What kind of adventure can a GM put together and what does the process and the end result look like?

Hi Jeff, thanks for the question!

The book has a sizeable section of play examples showing The Adventure Crafter going through its paces. That doesn't help you, obviously, when trying to evaluate the book before buying. However, on the Word Mill Games site (link to the right) you can find a link to the one of the largest examples in the book that gives you the kind of read through demonstration that you're looking for.

If you already purchased the pdf, you should receive an email notice letting you know about the update. You can access the file in your DriveThru library to download the updated book.

Happy gaming!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
