Avalon’s Solo Adventure System

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Avalon’s Solo Adventure system is a way for you to play 5e D&D by yourself, where you get to control a party of adventurers as they seek out glory and great deeds.

The system is usable for:

* anyone who has ever wanted to play a solo 5e D&D adventure.

* anyone who has ever wanted to learn the rules for 5e D&D by playing a fully realized solo version of the game.

* anyone that has wanted to play a solo 5e D&D adventure that takes their characters from acquiring their first adventure at an inn all the way up to defeating their evil nemesis.

* anyone who has ever wanted to play a fully cooperative game without a Gamemaster sitting on the opposite side of the table.

* And anyone who just has an hour or two and wants to play a game of 5e D&D.

It’s all here: the inns, the monsters, the treasures, the secrets, and the story!

The Avalon Solo Adventure system (ASA from now on) will offer you a fully realized campaign world, complete with towns, wilderness travel, set dungeons, randomized combat, special encounters, and a story—everything you need for a full campaign of 5e D&D.

Every aspect of the 5e D&D will be used during the course of the adventures of ASA, including combat, of course, but also skill use, character interaction, and the buying and selling of equipment within a limited kingdom economy.

While “solo” is in the title of this system, that in no way means that this is an adventure for a single character. Rather, it is a system designed for a solo Player. That Player will take command of an entire adventuring party and will guide them all throughout the campaign.

The ASA rules will simulate the place of the Gamemaster, with randomized tables governing the game play, providing surprise, and adding variety to the adventure. Since much of the content is randomly generated, a Player can even play the same adventure more than once and the adventure will play out very differently. However, Avalon Games will be providing many ASA adventures in order to provide as many different solo experiences to you, the Player, as possible.

In order to play ASA, you will need the ASA Base Rulebook and one of the ASA adventure books. You will also need the books for 5e D&D.

ASA is made specifically for solo party-adventuring, but it should be noted that the game can be played by a group of Players. The only thing ASA can’t really have is a Gamemaster since the system is specifically designed to randomly generate the adventure. It can, however, benefit from a Referee during group play (although it does not need one). Should someone in the group want to perform that aspect of the Gamemaster’s role, a Referee can add a layer of additional challenge to the game, since a Referee helps to maintain the core integrity of a group game. It might be a great way for a fledgling Gamemaster to attempt to learn how to arbitrate for a group of Players.

As the maps are only for reference they have not been supplied other than within the product itself.

If you would like a pdf of the regional maps though, drop me an email and I would be happy to send you a copy.

Ya, agreed that the sample preview showing terrain maps certainly does not tell you anything about this product.

Preview has been updated, seems the system was acting wonky and showing some of the battle maps instead of the first few pages of the rules.

A couple of questions about the system. First, are the four books from the Kickstarter all included with the system purchase (core rules, encounters, adventure, maps)? Second, is there a master list anywhere that has each of the quest lines listed by book, so I don't have to search through everything one by one if I want to buy a particular one? And finally, do you ever sell the quest lines in bundles?

Yes you get all four of the core books.

No, sorry we have not made such a list, it would be very long indeed.

We plan to offer a bundle maybe next year. Although you can get ea h of the waves with the current Kickstarter

What is the "D&D 5e" equivalent under the old TSR "AD&D" line? Is it anywhere close to AD&D 3rd Edition (hope, hope)...?

You know that’s a fun question. Is 5th different than 3rd edition, yes very different in fact. With that said while the monsters and skill tests are all different stats, they still can be used.

Example, if you, during the adventure get into a fight with a few orcs. Well if you are using the 3rd edition rules, than just use the stats for that edition.

You might have to figure some stuff out when it comes to skill rolls and the like, but ya you could use any edition for this system. It is the adventure itself that is offered, so any system could be used with a bit of elbow grease.

Robert H,

I think you missed an opportunity to give prospective buyers some feel for the extent of the rules, the mechanics, etc. Your "Full Size Sample" is seven pages of fairly generic terrain maps. That's it. You might want to consider a sample that would actually inform folks about your product. There is a ready market for these not only for someone looking for a "one off" adventure but there is a whole group (Solo Wargamers Association) with their own blog, their own publication (The Lone Warrior) who could be interested in what your system had to offer - if they had any clear picture of what that was. Thanks.

Cheers,

So, I'm finally taking some time to start into this adventure system. Sadden to see that there is much activity for the game on Avalon Game's own forums. Thought I'd try here to see if I can get a question answered or directed to the proper place for how-to-play questions. I don't fully understand the travel system that is supposed to be used within the game. For my first quest, I am trying the Holy Delivery quest. I see where the Wizard's tower is located using the map on page 40 of the Perth Map Book. There are small hexes and megahexes that encompass sets of the small hexes (some entirely, some partly). So when I'm counting my travel, I use the small hexes right? Not sure what the megahexes are meant to convey, if anything. Okay so after completing the quest, there is a statement that the adventure took 9 days. However, I cannot see how that was computed - given that road travel is 4 hexes a day, the trip to the tower (6 hexes) would take 2 days, so 4 days roundtrip. How does this become 9 days? And if the...See more

Hey thanks for the input, yeah our web site is being re-worked, but it’s taking a lot longer then we thought. Here is a good place to ask questions or you can direct them to my email, which is listed on the credits page.

So to answer your questions...

Use the regional maps with the smaller hexes inside the mega hexes. These maps will generally also have the terrain and movement costs listed on that same page. Realm maps are just to give you a broad look at the area in question.

As for the time spent in this adventure, some of the writers estimated the time it would take to complete the adventure and some did not. In this case the writer assumed you spent some time back in town doing whatever before the adventure finally closes. This time can be different based on choices you made in that adventure.

As always you can ignore the indicated time and figure it yourself. The time track for the most part is to keep you sort of knowing when weather will change and...See more

Hi sorry but I have one more question.
I cant find the Northern Oaken Wood encounter chart. Its not in the Encounter book or the adventure book. It seems without it I can't progress with the main adventure arch to combat goblins?

For most encounters I'm using the DnD 5e rule books to come up with NPCs to fight, which I believe is the intention. But the entry in to the kings guard doesn't inform me of any stats for an NPC to battle to prove ourselves, what am I supposed to use as reference.

I'm really enjoying these rules so far and understand what others say about battle set ups, I'm just using the maps that I think fit and try to think of how they would be arranged if I were DM, It can be a long winded process and quite tiring being GM and player, but it is a very open and lovely random system. Its not perfect but something that creates an adventure this random is never going to be..

Ok I don’t have a lot of experience with organized group D&D, but I understand the basics. So just want to make sure I play this correctly. So basically I show up in town and decide to go to say- The Yellow Toad Tavern first. Do I just go to that section, pick an adventure seed and then go on my quest? What do I do when complete? Can I go back to town and go to a different location? Like the Town Hall for example? Do I have to go back to the Tavern and look for a new quest or can I go go to another location and look for new quests? Is it “open world” so to speak? Apologies if this is basic knowledge, fairly new to D&D but this system looks like a lot of fun and I’m anxious to give it a try.

Once you go to a location and pick an adventure and complete said adventure you can go to another location seeking new stuff to do or go back to the old location and seek out new quests.

Who thought it was a good idea to put a DC15 Athletics check climb as the primary component of a lvl 1 quest, where a failure will likely outright kill nearly all character classes? The Halfling's Delight quest could use a little work, but there are a couple of ways to fix it. Make it at least recommended for character lvl 2+, or provide a little introduction to the nesting grounds that describes the typical egg locations and recommends climbing gear, which can be purchased locally. Additionally, why would adventurers just know where the birds are located? This seems like a good opportunity to ask around town, it is likely that people know where the Poperner's roost, but just aren't crazy enough to do the climbing. Finally, with the location "a few days down the coast", I was looking forward to taking the trip itself and exercising the travel rules, but instead the quest simply whisked us there. I know these are things that I could modify to my liking, but given that this might be one of the first...See more

I have only used the core d&d book e5.
I have more or less stopped playing. Occasional play but use the Tunnel and Trolls rules as I don't think the effort you have to put in is worth the hassle especially when it comes to d&d combat. If you are looking for expansions, drive thru have plenty.
Hope you enjoy. I didn't.

Ok, I purchased the core set, out of curiosity, where do you go next once completed? I see Town Guard book one, Royal Wedding, A witch is born. Are these adventures separate or linked together? I also see mentions of child of destiny series book 2 and 3, which is book #1? What is recommended after playing the core adventure? Thanks!

So there. Are all kinds of directions to go in.

The Child of Destiny series starts where the main story adventure in the core game leaves off, starting with Royal Wedding, then on to A Witch is Born and next Terror at Raven Crest. More adventures in that series will be released, one a month the next four months.

Other adventures are the two Town Guard books, the first of three sidetrack adventures books.

We plan for two new adventure books each month for the next two years.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
