100 Pirates to Encounter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Pirates are ever-popular and this supplement has 100 different pirates that can be used to flesh out the next lot encountered. The pirates are most suited for a traditional fantasy setting, rather than a historical one, due to different races and the use of magic. Some of the pirates are captains, and sometimes their ships are mentioned, whilst others are more ordinary crewmen and -women. Some of the pirates given could be a source of adventure hooks, as the characters are paid to hunt them down. Others could disrupt characters' plans, when their ship is attacked. Or they could simply be used to liven up a port's watering hole.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample pirates:

  • Brash Breyfogle: A middle-aged pirate with a wild streak that’s only gotten meaner with every passing year, he has a face like a meat ax, and a laugh like a warthog in rut. Though he makes an adequate sergeant, creating bonds of camaraderie with a small group of men, he is worthless as a captain as he tends to let his love of drink (along with his temper) get in the way.
  • Trish Tarys, the Fiend of Fallaway: A red-haired noble bastard, Trish was the first woman to ever be sentenced to hang on the island of Fallaway. Her crimes ranged from the petty to the cardinal, but it was her own father, Lord Judge Rushtide, who presided. The sentence was never carried out, though. Trish escaped that night, slew her father, and escaped with his ship. None know how she did it, and many claim that the charges of witchcraft she faced may not have been as false as some believed.
  • Tame “Strop” Mudgett: A quiet man with a thick mustache, Tame is always putting a razor’s edge on his own, and his crewmates’, blades. Your sword can never be too sharp, he’s fond of saying. Gifted with steady hands, he often passes the time during calms by shaving his fellows, and cutting their hair.
  • Rowena “the Rake”: A powerfully-built half-elf with a wild mane of dark hair, Rowena’s skin is covered in black, tiger-stripe tattoos. Often seen pacing before battle is joined, she lets loose with a roar, transforming into a vicious beast. Those who stand before her learn that tigers need no steel; their claws and teeth are more than enough to rend and rake.
  • Glorian Harras: A huge half-orc with a booming voice, Glorian’s chest is covered in deep scars from wounds that would have killed lesser warriors. Though he looks and sounds like a brute, rumors say that he is far more shrewd and sly than many would believe. What they don’t know is that the true Glorian Harras is actually the monkey sitting on the half-orc’s shoulder. A polymorphed wizard, Glorian recruited his first mate Grizzen to pretend to be the captain, and to advise him. Grizzen simply does what his captain tells him to, and so far he’s managed not to give the game away.

We've got very little true pirate stuff; this, a PWYW generator and a Hero Kids supplement.

We've got rather more sea-themed supplements though.

A lot of the older supplements, which were done in Scribus which doesn't deal well with layers, sadly lack the feature. Hopefully they will get updated at some point; layers are useful.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
