Magonomia Starter Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Magonomia™ is the tabletop roleplaying game of Renaissance wizardry. The player characters are wizards whose magic is based on authentic sixteenth century folklore. Together, they explore mysteries in a world steeped in invisible spirits, enigmatic faeries, and secret societies.

What destiny do your stars foretell?

Welcome to Magonomia

This product is a self-contained, playable version of Magonomia that includes everything you need for your first several adventures: pregenerated characters, over 50 different spells, sample creatures and opponents, and all the rules you need to enjoy many hours of adventure with your friends. Shewstone Publishing will also be publishing two adventures for use with these Starter Rules.

The Mysteries of Magic

Your wizard will wield one of the noble Sciences of magic: alchemy, astrology, theurgy, sorcery, or witchcraft. Their spells enable wondrous feats such as invisibility, flight, even forecasting the future. Innovative divination rules mean magic can always advance the story, but never spoils the mystery.

An Age of Wonder and Adventure

Magonomia is set in a fantasy version of sixteenth-century England that has the fantastic elements of Renaissance tales. You might meet the elemental spirits of Shakespeare's The Tempest, the faeries of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the witches of MacBeth. Werewolves prowl the Yorkshire moors. Ghosts haunt the alleys of London. A host of invisible spirits swarm through the world and can be commanded by those who know their secret names. Enchanted England is a place of wonder and peril, a world ripe for adventure!

The problem with this and Curse of the One-Eyed Witch seems to have been downloading directly from DriveThruRPG to my Android tablet. When I downloaded from DTRPG to my desktop and then copied across to my tablet, it opened fine. The problem - whatever it was - was at my end. Now that I have the products open, I love them! They're great! And speaking as the founder of a library dedicated to magic & Paganism - the Adocentyn Research Library (www.adocentynlibrary.org) - I appreciate your attention to detail and realism.
Thank you for your attention to this!

I can open file 1.02_plain, but the file 1.0-2020 won't open. I get a message that it's in an invalid format. I have the same problem with the Curse adventure. BTW, I assume 1.02 is more recent than 1.0?

Thanks, I wasn't aware of any problems opening the file. It opens for me using Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to fix the file. I will re-upload the original illustrated 1.0 version later today. The only difference is that the 2020 version, which you can't open, removed an ad for our Kickstarter.

You're correct that 1.02 is more recent than 1.0. I missed the chance to keep track of errata (sorry, I was a rookie publisher in 2019) so I can't tell you the exact differences. :-(
The plain file was created so people who want to print a hard copy at a print shop can do it at lower cost.

Oh, I forgot to mention, for the Curse adventure I recommend you download Curse of the One-Eyed Witch Revised Edition, which is a separate product. The original edition of that adventure has been deactivated (no longer offered in DriveThru). Nothing was wrong with it, except lack of illustrations and low production quality.

I had a look at this during the very end of the Kickstarter campaign. I could point out that there are a lot of positive things to say about this, but I think that the project might be a bit too ambitious and suffer from scope creep and that is going to drive up costs enough to turn off a lot of people. While there is a lot that is interesting, there's also a lot that should really be cut.
I doubt that many members of the realistic potential audience of this game will need to have "What is an RPG" explained to them yet again. Other parts could either be easily broken into a supplement or possibly delegated to other sources.

One of the most obvious examples of this is attempting to cover the actual Fate Core rules. This is a pretty significant chunk of these rules, and I think that it also is unnecessary for the target audience. Games like Dresden Files Accelerated, Atomic Robo, and the soon to be released Fate of Cthulhu might warrant this because those settings have enough of a following...See more

Thanks, I am glad you like the potential of this game! The choice to include Fate Core mechanics in the product is one I weighed for some time. I can definitely sympathize with the Fate gamer who sees that as repetitive to what they already have. I playtested the game with people who were less familiar with Fate and they strongly preferred having everything in one book. My hope is to bring some new people into Fate by drawing from audiences like theater and Renaissance fair fans. I tried to add some value by presenting Fate in my own words, not just copied-and-pasted, aimed at the newcomer. This is one of those design choices where you really can't please everyone. Since the entire magic system is new and original, I am optimistic that people who already know Fate will see enough value in the book to consider it worth the price.

Understood. Of course, I could be completely wrong. I had not considered those other audiences and really can't really comment on the appeal there. Still, I wonder if some slight trimming here and there could help (though I imagine that it's hard to do with your own creation in an unbiased way!).

Best of luck though, and hopefully you can make a better go the next time you try for funding on Kickstarter!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
