A Rasp of Sand is a rogue-lite adventure built on the skeleton of Knave. A Rasp of Sand is not a stand-alone product, you will need Knave or a similar system to run it.

Intended for 3-5 players and a GM.

A mighty ocean spirit's grief and anger have hung over your village for generations. Every twenty-five years your village sends one of its young to the island temple to die as a sacrifice. This generation is the first time the village has decided to send down multiple heirs as a sacrifice, with the hope that returning the Crown will help atone for your ancestor's sins. You will most assuredly fail this time, but you will learn. You will pass these memories onto your Heir, and give them a better chance. A small chance, but if you rub enough small grains of sand against a boulder eventually that boulder will crumble.

Featuring

Trades a class-like system of advancement that passes on from one Heir to the next. Your family will grow more skilled as the generations pass.

Marine Mutants the Temple mirrors ecosystems of the ocean. So the inhabitants do as well. Rasp includes forty-four new monsters, all of which have a mutation that can be passed onto your family. All without having to figure out underwater combat!!!

An Ever Shifting Temple the five Depths of the Temple change each time your Heirs dive into them. Providing new threats, traps, puzzles, and challenges.

Sand is experience, money and the consciousness of a creature in aRoS. When ingested you gain that much XP and you relive memories from the creature's life. Every time an Heir dies their Heir ingests their Sand. Reliving and gaining knowledge. You as a player get to keep your knowledge from Heir to Heir. Learn about the Depths and use that knowledge against your foes.

Treasures of the Deep that hide mysteries of their own. Learn more about the history of the world or aRoS by investigating these powerful treasures and pass them on as heirlooms.

Slurp Slugs yeah swallow some slugs.

I hope you enjoy your time in the Deep.

Hello! Is there any way to buy the PDF, see if I like it, and then afterwards pay the additional $8 to get the book as well?

Howdy Dwight! Honestly not yet. I am looking at future works being focused on my house setting or completely agnostic. Revisiting existing works is possible BUT it might be as a follow-up to the original not just an update.

Noticed a couple minor errors in the Slug Effect table. Slug Climb obviously is intended to be Slug Slime, and Iron Scales is Scales of Iron, but there's an effect called 'Hypnotize' that isn't described anywhere in the book. I'm replacing it with Read Mind for my table, but if anyone knows of a better option let me know!

Page 7 says "You may spend your Rest reparing L portions of Jerky per Ingredient."

Reparing isn't a word and I don't know what an L portion is, what does this sentence mean?

It's supposed to say "Preparing" and L refers to the PCs level. So a level 3 character could prepare 3 portions of jerky per ingredient. Level 4 can get 4 portions, etc.

Hi, I just bought a physical copy of the module, the only problem is that I have only one player to play with (one player + 1GM). Any suggestion on how could I make an adventure viable? Thanks!

Hey there! Sorry for the late reply, Drivethru emails pile up and I miss good stuff like this.

There are two options that might work:

You could try running it cooperatively with each out you controlling two PCs. *I secretly think Rasp could be run without a GM, you would just have to be willing to challenge yourselves and maaaaaaaybe make some default actions for the monsters. Like all Chum run unless interrupted, all Cuddlers get a sneak up and get a free action, etc.*

The other option would be to let your player run a whole family at once! It could be a neat twist on the idea of Rasp. Let them create a father, mother, grandma, daughter, etc. Then go in with that. They can then RP each character as much as they'd like OR run them as a sort of unit. (Kind of like the Roguelike Children of Morta)

Kind of confused about how big the rooms are supposed to be. It seems like AROS is built to be run theater of the mind, but then there's some spells and monsters that give specific distances for their effects, so it's kind of hard to get a feel for what the dimensions of any given location is. A lot of locations mention the height of the ceiling, but not the width or length of the room. I personally like using battle mats for combat, so it would be nice to have some idea of how big these spaces are supposed to be rather than having to just wing it.

Any one have any suggestions?

Hi Andrew - I'd suggest sketching out the room as it best fits your imagination and battel mat away.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
