ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Seas of Vodari is a 268-page book that provides fifth edition material for both gamemasters and players to enjoy a single adventure or an entire campaign full of swashbuckling action and magical adventure. If you are looking for undersea adventure, check out Under the Seas of Vodari, our follow-up to this book.

The Seas of Vodari campaign setting was created to support seafaring adventures that focus on the crew of a ship hunting sea monsters, exploring mysterious uncharted islands, visiting bustling port cities, following maps to find buried treasure, and battling cutthroat pirates. The setting is also well suited to running campaigns in its large port cities, with swashbuckling heroes getting mixed up with fierce rivals, notorious crime syndicates, feuding nobles, and scheming politicians.

In the book you’ll find:

  • Vodari’s history, its pantheon of sixteen gods, and details of everyday life.

  • A tour of the world of Vodari from the pirate islands of the south to the kingdom of the frost giants in the north. This gazetteer focuses on power groups, allies and adversaries, key locations, city maps, and adventure ideas for dozens of islands.

  • Racial stats to create Cursed Soul, Sea Dwarf, Siren (Seasinger and Wavedancer), Minotaur, and Voda PCs and details for the place of all the people of Vodari.

  • The gunslinger class with four subclasses (Arcane Gunmaster, Musketeer, Pistolero, and Sniper)

  • Fourteen new subclasses for the core rules classes, backgrounds, substitute bonds, and feats.

  • Swashbuckling and seafaring equipment, including flintlock firearms, musical instruments, adventuring gear, trade goods, and trinkets.

  • 12 ship templates, ship modifications, cannons, and example ships with crews to launch onto the seas of your campaign.

  • Interesting and powerful aquatic and seafaring themed magic items and spells.

  • Rules for running duels, the Code of the Sea, random tables to fill out your world, and more.

  • 45 stat blocks providing monsters, beasts, and nonplayer characters designed to fit a seafaring world.

  • The Island with No Name starter adventure that takes players on a treasure hunt to a mysterious island

The Seas of Vodari

About the Seas of Vodari

Long ago, a vast continent was annihilated. The devastation left only a scattered few to start rebuilding their civilization on a ring of islands…

Vodari contains all of the iconic things you expect in a fantasy setting, but the familiar becomes surprising and new. Dungeons can be found above and below the waves, in the form of caves, shipwrecks, and lost temples. From island to island, you’ll find variety and wonders, ranging from bustling ports filled with travelers from distant lands to the unexplored wilderness, ruins, monsters, and other dangers. Halflings live in villages made of interconnected boats and anything that can float. Dwarves are respected shipbuilders, sailing the seas in search of relics from their sunken homeland and battling an enemy below in the Night War. Elves dwell high in the treetops and below the surface of the seas. Gnomes find themselves on opposite sides of a battle between machines and nature. Goblins are as likely to be encountered as raiders riding waveskippers as working as a tinkerer living in a city. Instead of land armies, Vodari has navies and pirates that battle with flintlocks and cannons to control the seas. The most dangerous monsters are found in the seas, such as sea dragons and white whales. Nature is as deadly as the most powerful monsters, with furious hurricanes, catastrophic tsunamis, and fiery volcanoes

Can vodas invent a look to turn into, or mix and match traits, or are they deliberately restricted to people they've seen?

As a GM, I would assume that a voda has spent time over their life observing various people from common ancestries and would have a library to draw on to mix and match. I think turning into a rare ancestry they have not seen before in person or recently could pose some challenges.

We have made some slight updates to this race for Under the Seas of Vodari. For that book we tweak the text slightly to "With this trait, you can also change into a type of creature that you have seen before that is Medium-sized and humanoid-shaped."

The word "type" of creature allows for more flexibility to mix and match versus being a specific person.

We are considering updating the text for Seas of Vodari as well if this wording makes the final Under the Seas of Vodari book.

Hello, what a great book!! I had a question about the spirit cleric class: when you use your channel divinity to give your spirit companion some power in the world, do you take the action to imbue the spirit with that power, and then on your next turn use an action to use that power? Or is it all on one action on one turn?

Glad you like the book. I'm asked the specific designer of this subclass for a detailed answer. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for your patience.
The only cost is whatever is listed in the specific spirit form. There is no hidden activation cost.
For Lesser Spirit Ally - Warrior is a reaction, Messenger is a bonus action, Healer and Trickster are an action.
For Greater Spirit Ally - Warrior is an action, Messenger is a bonus action, Healer is a bonus action, and Trickster is an action.

I noticed that the gunslinger's "two guns" fighting style only grants the ability bonus to damage for the second pistol, not the ability to use two-weapon fighting with pistols in the first place. Are gunslingers meant to have the option to do that normally, regardless of fighting style? By RAW, 2WF is melee only, and I couldn't find anything modifying that in SoV.

On a related note, what do you think of a fighting style for mixed pistol and melee, like the third benefit of Firearm Expert? (Since the full feat is two-thirds redundant for gunslingers.)

I'm going to outline this line by line. Some of this will be review...

1) Twin Guns is meant to be the ranged equivalent of Two-Weapon Fighting found in the fighter and ranger classes.

2) At 2nd level, gunslingers get Firearms Training, which basically grants you most of the Firearms expert feat... except for the ability to add your modifier to the second ranged attack's damage. This is by design to protect the Musketeer archetype's niche.

3) At 3rd level, you can choose the Musketeer gunslinger archetype and gain the Swordplay feature. This allows you to choose an additional fighting style from Dueling, Protection, and Two-Weapon Fighting.

There are two paths to playing gunslinger who uses blade and gun the way you are asking for.
The first is to take the Firearms Expert.
The second is to choose the Musketeer archetype and take Two-Weapon Fighting with your Swordplay feature.

I think the musketeer is a very good subclass for roleplay...See more

Basically, we removed the various backgrounds on all the pages for the low-ink. So you get white behind the text. All of the illustrations are still there.

Any chance for an artificer subclass side thing or update?

Shawn E July 05, 2020 2:27 pm UTC
1) I think playing an artificer from Xoleni (or anywhere else in Vodari) would be a great character build. I've had a PC artificer and NPC artificers in my game. There is nothing stopping you from using official materials to play that class in your Vodari game or other official subclasses such as the Rogue Swashbuckler or the Tempest domain for the cleric. Our goal of the Vodari book was to add new options that fit swashbuckling and seafaring campaigns on top of what was already officially available.

2) Tribality published an Alchemist Class for 5e by Rich Howard back in 2016. It is quite popular and highly-reviewed. It includes 7 subclasses, one of which is an artificer.
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/177767/Alchemist-5E

3) The artificer is not part of the D&D SRD (System Reference Document), other than the Gnome trait 'Artificer’s Lore'. So my understanding is that we can't publish third party content, such as artificer subclasses, that refer to the base artificer...See more

Hi Jonah. Sea Elves are a variant of Elves, and the racial build can be found in the D&D Books "Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes" & the "Explorer's Guide to Wildemount".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
