Non-Humans for The Sword of Cepheus

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Sword of Cepheus assumes an anthropocentric world; however, in many sword & sorcery, sword & planet, and fantasy settings, humanity is not alone. Be that lizardfolk lurking in primordial swamps, undead heroes and villains transcending death, or dwarves delving deep into the earth. Some are allies, some are enemies, and yet others are the heroes of the story itself.

Non-Humans is a supplement for The Sword of Cepheus detailing twelve non-human species, complete with special abilities and full character generation rules. Here you will find anything from reptilian and insectoid humanoids, through the “demihumans” of traditional fantasy role-playing, to draconids to undead revenants. For each, we present abilities, career tables, mishap tables, and even tables for use in expanded character generation– one career per species, useful whether you intend to present these species as player character options or generate varied and interesting non-human NPCs.

We present here twelve non-human species: antediluvians, draconids, dwarves, elves, geckofolk, gnomes, goblins, halflings, insectoids, lizardfolk, revenants, and trolls, with their full statistics and character generation information.

This is not a stand-alone book. To use this sourcebook, you require a copy of The Sword of Cepheus.

Non-Humans also has excellent compatibility with Cepheus Light, and good compatibility with the Cepheus Engine Standard Reference Document (SRD) and other OGL 2d6 games.

There is already a draft for a second Non-Humans supplement for The Sword of Cepheus, on which we are working. We will potentially compile both into a single printable book (and maybe a third one, as well!).

Questions about Revenants: It says that Revenants require the flesh and blood of living or recently deceased sentient beings. If you look up the word "sentient," it means having the sense of touch, so all animals are sentient. A Revenant could live on animals, right?

Since Revenants have no career track, I assume that a player or game master could create one by using the career track for the living, to find out what skills and statistics they had before they died.

A revenant can live on sentient/sapient beings, such as humans, lizardmen, etc., but not on less intelligent animals. Whether this applies to dolphins, squids, ravens, and pigs is up to the individual Referee.

Using a previous life career track can indeed serve to create the person the Revenant was before dying.

Would you say that a non human has to use their non human career track, or would a player playing one have the choice of choosing a career track from the main book? Also, what about a human raised by nonhumans using their career track? Captain Carrot from the Discworld novels could be simulated by having a human character use the Dwarf career.

Usually, non-humans will use their own careers, based on their respective cultures, but in a cosmopolitan setting, they may use human careers as well. A human raised by non-humans will, indeed, use the non-human career.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
