ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

HISTORIAE MUNDI: A HISTORY OF THE KNOWN WORLD is a collection of stories, legends, maps, and illustrations detailing the history of the Known World, the fantasy setting of Mark Smylie's Artesia graphic novels, the novel The Barrow and its (eventual) sequels, and the roleplaying game Artesia: Adventures in the Known World (with any luck to be released in a new edition called Sword & Barrow). A system-neutral sourcebook presented to entertain, inform, and inspire, with an extensive timeline and glossary, HISTORIAE MUNDI maps and explains the evolution of the kingdoms, empires, and peoples of a diverse and complex fantasy setting.

A system-neutral companioin volume, GEOGRAPHIAE MUNDI, a sourcebook and tour of the Known World in the present day of the novels and graphic novels, is in preparation.

I love Mythras, and Artesia would make a perfect setting for it - is this book 'HISTORIAE MUNDI' definantly system-neutral?

Yes, HISTORIAE MUNDI is just a lore and history sourcebook so it can be used with any system. The new edition of the ARTESIA RPG that I am working on is should be pretty compatible with Mythras.

New edition? Interesting!
Can you tell what game engine will be used? Still Fuzion? Or something modern? Any information about mechanic will be nice to read too.

At the moment it's looking like it will be based on the new edition of RuneQuest, though it'll take a little while for that conversation to play out. RuneQuest was in fact the game system for which the setting of the Known World was originally written.

Last question. Will you update product "Artesia: Adventures in the Known World" with high resolution art? In the preview I can see it is hard to read names on the map.

I will take a look, the RPG was uploaded to DriveThru over a decade ago so it's possible that back then there were file upload limits.

A new high resolution file has been added, and the full-size preview should reflect that.

Have you taken a look at Mythras? Its a descendant from RuneQuest (it was actually RuneQuest 6e, but that's a complicated story) and honestly may be easier to work with than the most recent RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha, both from a system flexibility standpoint and maybe even from a licensing position.

Have you considered using the 'Mythras' rpg/engine instead. It would probably be cheaper to license and use than the RuneQuest engine.

First, It is great to see new Artesia books back in print (in any form PDF or paper).

Is the Historiae Mundi different from what is in 'Adventures in the Known World' or is it sub-set? In other words, how much information does Historiae Mundi repeat from 'Adventures in the Known World'?

Hi Brian! Everything that is in the RPG history section is in the new book, and to that core has been added other previously published material from the essays that appeared in the graphic novels and Annuals (including the extensive timeline and maps from Annual #3), so I'd guess 70-80% of the material is older material reorganized and put together. But then that material has been expanded upon and there is also all-new material--for example, new sections on Nymarga the Devil and Azharad (the lurking "lich" of THE BARROW), the Hemispian cities of the League, new material on the Usurper of Palatia's rise to power, more recent figures like Uthella of Uthmark, etc.--along with new art and illustrations. The maps from the timeline have also been redone, and the timeline updated in places to better match the current narrative of the novels. It's meant to be an exhaustive compilation of everything previously published plus new material to give as complete a history as possible. The companion book, GEOGRAPHICAE...See more

Waiting on both softcover and hardcover proofs now! I've been warned DriveThru's POD supplier is running a bit behind but hopefully those will be on their way soon and then with any luck those options will become available shortly thereafter.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
