Blast Off Into the Unknown!

Heroes of the Cosmos is a minimalist, narrative-driven tabletop roleplaying system. It is designed with the space pulp action of yesteryear in mind, with exploration and adventure at the forefront.

Character Creation

Players choose an archetype, species, perk, and a quirk to create their characters. An archetype is made up of two parts. A trait (Agile, Brawny, or Crafty) and a basic concept (typically a profession). A species represents the general type of creature the character is. A perk represents a powerful skill, ability, or item the character possesses. A Quirk represents a drawback to the character like having a bad reputation or being cruel.

System

Players roll between 1-3 six sided dice depending on their archetype. They need one of the dice to roll between 4-6 (depending on the difficulty of the task at hand). Perks make the challenge easier while Quirks make it more difficult. Players can spend Heroism to use their Perks, and gain heroism back by using their Quirks.

This Game Also Includes

A bestiary of strange aliens and terrible galactic despots.

A list of common adventure scenarios

And More!

This game is based on the Tricube Tales system by Richard Woolcock and is designed with fast-paced gameplay in mind. Character creation only takes a few minutes and will have players blasting off to the stars in no time!

I like what I’m seeing here, but I’m not sure I understand how alien species work. If I’m reading pp. 6–8 correctly, each particular alien species has a corresponding Perk and Quirk that represent its racial attributes. For example, a Gray alien is both telepathic (Perk) and frail (Quirk).

But does the alien player character also get an additional Perk and Quirk that represents him as an individual within his race? For example, can my Gray alien character be a brave (Perk) and vindictive (Quirk) individual who is also telepathic (Perk) and frail (Quirk) racially? Or do alien species only get that racial Perk and Quirk?

If alien species get both a racial and an individual set of Perks and Quirks, then the fact that humans get two sets of individual Perks and Quirks makes sense, presumably to make up for not having a racial set. But if aliens species are only supposed to get one racial set of Perks and Quirks, then why would anyone choose to play them when you can play humans with...See more

PUBLISHER
Hey great question! Your assumption is correct. Every character receives a perk and quirk of the player's choosing. If the player character is an alien, their species is treated as an additional perk and quirk. This means they'll have two perks and quirks total, just like a human.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
