Of Breath and Flow: Mystic Martial Arts Action and Savage Wuxia Adventures

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Add some cultivation to your Savage Worlds Adventure Editon game, Cutivated Chi, that is!  Of Breath and Flow is a collection of rules and setting content that GMs can use to add a Wuxia action vibe to any game they run, from fantasy to Sci-Fi.

Inside are 12 new Edges (and 2 thematically appropriate Hindrances), 5 Fu Schools, 20 Fu Styles, 3 new Powers, and an appendix of more than 20 traditional Fu weapons, plus rules on the Wu Xing 5-element cycle as Trapping, and Culitvated Chi.

Rather than set the file as PWYW, we have set the file to have a full-length PDF preview.  If you like it, please buy it!

UPDATE:  The custom preview PDF is still not working, so I have removed it, but the watermarked PDF is the full document.  My apologies for the problems.

Additional special thanks to Huan Xu at the website ImmortalMountain for inspiration.  I recommend that site for excellent insights into Wuxia from a western perspective.

This looks very professionally done!

If you could, could you explain some of the rationale behind why Arcane Background (Mystic Wuxia) is considered to be worth the equivalent of four advances? It seems to have a bit more power and flexibility than a typical arcane background, but some limitations too. Reading through the PDF, I feel like I might have pegged it as worth maybe two advances. The Weapon Form Modifier does seem very strong, but that only applies to characters who take blast/bolt/burst/damage field, and some of the Fu styles don't even get access to any of those powers.

I just realized that, if I understand correctly, characters with Arcane Background (Mystic Wuxia) basically get a superpowered version of the Chi edge that can probably be used 10 times per combat instead of once. That's so powerful that now I'm worried that characters with Cultivated Chi will just ignore their actual powers and just focus on this use of their Chi.

But maybe that's intentional. Either you build a character who will take advantage of the Weapon Form Modifier to get a couple of ultra-powerful attacks each combat, or you pick utility powers that don't come up as often for flexibility, and focus on using most of your Chi with the Chi edge in combat.

At this point I suppose I'm just trying to get a feel for how this arcane background tends to work out in practice.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comment, and I am sure Steve appreciates your compliment!

As far as the 4 Advances, Mystic Wuxia also grants an improved version of the "Chi" edge, and allows Smite, Protection, Leap, and BoostLower trait to be used as Free actions (and with a reduced cost due to normal scope restrictions). Depending on the scope and content of your Campaign, a character with Mystic Wuxia might also have social advantages and contacts from their school, or even reputation advantages, but those are more... fuzzy.

Additionally, the Style Apostate edge enables a character to take powers from other styles taught by their school, so blastboltburstdamage field should be easy enough to acquire that way.

I hope that answers your question?

Savage Worlds is not my usual RPG stomping grounds... never the less, I have enjoyed the plunge into Wuxia mythology! Looking under your Wu Kwan Secrets is there a missing Wu Kwan secret? "Speaker of the Lost" is referenced in the "The Brotherhood of Lost Souls" as a Wu Kwan Secret but the only close reference is "Flesh of the Lost".... Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Thank you for catching that! The error is in the School description. The two Wu Kwan Secrets for the Brotherhood of Lost Souls should read "Flesh of the Lost (Veteran), Eater of Souls (Heroic)." I changed the names to not be quite so .... florid, and failed to adjust that in the PDF. I will make note of that for an update.

I am glad you have enjoyed it, and hopefully it will draw you into the Savage World fold, as it were!

Thanks for making note of this. I noticed this issue a few days ago, reported it to OneBookshef's support contact, and hope to have this sorted soon. In the meantime, if you are OK with the Watermark, the Full-Size Preview includes the entire file as well, so you can at least read the content.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
