Solo Roleplaying Rules for Dark Streets & Darker Secrets

Divider_Silver.png

Explore the dark streets of the city, where every shadow is alive with sinister intent and the darkness gathers, but you are walking alone.

Solo roleplaying Dark Streets & Darker Secrets is a dramatic and ominous experience where anything can happen but only the bad things seem to fall in your path.

The solo rules included in the core rulebook of DS&DS refer to solo as one GM and one player. These solo rules refer to solo as one player and no GM, a true solitaire game.

Solo is a perfect way to learn a new game, test your first adventures and going beyond just making characters when you are first getting to know the rules.

Solo Rules Supplement

This supplement is written in a similar conversational style as the core rules, which you will need to play. This book will refer you to tables and pages of the main rules. I do sometimes suggest that the tables are used in a different order to how they are presented in the rules, but only when this provides a better solo experience.

Solo Advice

The final pages of this book contain tips on solo play that may be equally useful for playing any solo game.

I picked this up a couple days ago and played my first round yesterday. It was excellent. Smooth, fast, easy and fun.

As a former life-time GM, the imagination side is easy for me to do solo, and the little prompts from the word association list make it easy to move into the next scene.

I suggest people pick up some modern floor plan templates for adventure sites.

I have recently, with the sad but unavoidable dissoloution of my weekly game group, moved into solo play as my primary enjoyment of the hobby. After GMing for 33 years, it is now a lot of fun to be exploring avenues that could never be realized when I was running my sandbox games. No matter what you want as a GM, the players have their own desires. And that's a good thing. But after decades of kingdom saving and dungeon crawls I am ready for the weird adventures that have hither to never been realized. Your products have been excellent tools to help accomplish that.

If I may makes suggestion though. I have been rapidly advancing my characters, because I am a touch done out with starting level adventures. I have run a ton of those over 30 years. A product for creating appropriate back stories for higher level play would be very useful. Specifically keyed to specific games and genre would be ideal. I have worked out my own hacks but a well designed product would be welcome.

Sorry to hear about your group.

What I do for rapidly advancing characters is play one solo scene for every level, or chapter of their backstory. For games with lifepath systems I would look at skills gained in that tour of duty or term of service and play a short scene that relates to that. this helps me flesh out where they come from without having to slog through the early career stages.

I have done a couple things. Playing one adventure per level has been what I have done most often, but for a few OSR style games I rolled two monsters and a treasure then designed a sketch scenario to include them. I would finish by rolling a few saving throws, then sketch out an out come. This combined with some side by side setting development gave me a pretty good story. Do that for each level , with some mock down time to bleed off the cash and magic items, and you have an add hoc life path.

That was easy enough for an OSE/D&D game, but I don't have the random charts to do that with, say, Mage the Ascension.

Yes, I just don't have enough hours in the day to get all the layout done.
It is definitely coming.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
