Check out the optional, but hugely useful, Digital Resource Companion, which contains all 860 tables and tens of thousands of results in Excel files for use during gameplay.

FlexAI is an attempt to model and simulate monster and NPC behavior in combat and social encounters.  It scales in complexity from very simple to as complex as you as a GM would like it to be.  It can be used in any tabletop roleplaying game with zero preparation time.

The system takes only a few minutes to learn, is easy and quick to use, and can enhance any tabletop roleplaying combat experience.

This massive resource contains hundreds of detailed scenarios to generate dynamic, contextually-appropriate creature behavior in various combat circumstances.

Over 860 tables, tens of thousands of combinations and permutations, and yet all it takes is a few minutes and a roll of a d100 to imbue you adventures with intelligence and fascination!

Not sure?  Check out the FREE Sample of FlexAI to get a sense of how things are structured.

Hi Steve--The Excel files are part of the FlexAI Digital Resource Companion:

Hi Luka--I'm genuinely confused by what you're referencing here. The Guidebook is typically $5-$10, and the hardcopy versions are as cheap as I can make them. Every single IGS product includes the PDF/digital versions of things for free when you order the hardcopy.

Please let me know if I'm missing something in your question...?

Do you know if this will work with LibreOffice Calc?

Hi Thomas--I don't know for sure, but it's a fairly simple Excel file so I don't see why it wouldn't work with anything that supports Excel. The only weirdness is that it has some protection on it but that doesn't prevent opening the file.

Thomas--To clarify, this product is a PDF book / softcover / hardcover. So it won't work with Excel or Calc or Sheets because it's a PDF file.

What I think you're asking about is the Digital Resource Companion, which is a group of Excel files and to which my comment below regarding compatibility applies:

Hi there, I've been reading through the printer friendly version of this title and noticed that, for every Action table within the Soldier archetype, column C is identical to column D. I assume this is an error, but if not could you please explain the logic?

Cheers.

Hi Dirk--Apologies; just seeing this now. The heuristic used to calculate the variances between combinations of the factors that go into each table may indeed result in some cases where there are few, or no, differences between particular scenarios. That's consistent with the intent and design of the calculations.

Hope that helps! Thanks for reaching out :)

The fact that the very first word after the colophon of this “study in detail” is misspelt (“Foreward”) rubs me not exactly the right way...

Heh, completely fair. I’ve published dozens of books over decades, and literally just learned last month that it should indeed be “Foreword” as you point out.

Rest assured that all IGS books going forward will of course use the correct spelling!

I purchased the book yesterday and I only had time for a quick peek, but if I have understood correctly how the system works, I think I've noticed something odd with some tables:

The Flex AI system requires you to roll 1D100 and search the result in different tables depending on the role of the creature in combat (soldier, lurker, controller...), the type of creature (normal, elite, minion...) and its current status (fresh, bloodied, cornered...), selecting a different column on the table depending on the power level of the creature compared to the power level of the player characters.

If my understanding of the system is correct, "easier encounters" (green column) should assign a larger range of values to "flee actions" and "combat lulls" (negative bonus) than "harder encounters" (orange column), so the easier enemies will flee more frequently and can be defeated more easily than the harder enemies. Likewise, harder encounters should have a larger...See more

Hi David! Thanks for reaching out. You've got the right of it in terms of the intent; the only thing I'd qualify a bit is the "different column on the table depending on the power level of the creature compared to the power level of the PCs"... it's actually meant to be more flexible than that, in that the D/GM should select which of the flextable columns to use based on the intent of the encounter. This selection may or may not have anything to do with relative challenge or power levels.

The four flextable columns are built to have an impact across *all* of the possible outcomes, not just the surges and lulls. Behind the scenes, each possible outcome has a weight assigned to it, which is normalized across the d100 range to provide a numeric range value in the text. It's all algorithmic, so I'd be surprised (and disappointed in myself, but glad for the correction!) to find a case where it was swapping things unintentionally.

Can you pick an example of the phenomenon you're...See more

Hi Jason, thanks for your quick reply.

As I said in my previous message, I have only had enough time for giving the manual a quick peek, so my first impression could be wrong. Now that you have suggested I shouldn't look only at the combat surges and lulls, I will try to do a more extensive analysis paying attention to the rest of the things.

I will use the Brute/Normal/Fresh table as example because I mentioned this table in my previous message, but as I don't want to give the exact numbers of the table (unless you give me permission to do so), I will try to obfuscate a little the information talking in "percentages" and adding some values together.

GREEN COLUMN: creature is outmatched
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chance of receiving a combat surge (positive bonus): 65%
Chance of receiving a combat lull (negative bonus): 4%
Chance of no receiving a bonus or penalty: 31%

Chance of using main...See more

Will there be a PoD discount link for those of us who picked up the PDF? Also is this part of the Kickstarter? I didn't notice it there.

Hi Christopher! Yes, yesterday I sent out a heavily-discounted POD code to everyone who had already bought the PDF version. However I recognize that not everyone opts in to receive publisher communications so you might not have received it; if that's the case, please email me at infiniumGameStudios [at] gmail.com and I'll hook you up.

And yes, both the PDF as well as the POD codes were part of the Kickstarter and everyone entitled to one or both should have received them.

Good question! Yes; softcover and hardcover options have been submitted and are being reviewed now; typically the process takes ~3 weeks so I figure in September those should be options.

I added a note to the listing explaining this too. Thanks for asking!

Diogo--Please note that the hardcover POD option is now available. There will also be a softcover option available later this month once the proof arrives. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
