I’m wondering if heroquesting is like a community theatre group doing Shakespeare.
Most of the time it’s just average and you end up with Star Trek the Motion Picture. However, every now and then you get a Wrath of Khan.
Reputations are made! Stories are told! People rejoice!
But when it goes bad…you get the Star Wars prequels.
Reputations are destroyed! Crops go bad! People feud for generations over the results!
So it’s all sequels performed and produced by obsessed fans?

I like the Star Wars prequels.

But, yeah, that's a lot of what HeroQuests are.

They are magical Amateur Dramatics plays, where they do a normal play and riff off it, changing bits, or combining two plays together.

I am very pleased to announce that the Hardcover Standard Colour edition of Secrets of HeroQuesting is now live.

Thanks to Neil Gibson for preparing the POD.

DTRPG has now added an option to price the POD and PDF Bundle differently, so I have given it a $2 discount. If you want to buy the POD and PDF together, please use the bundle price.

If you have previously bought the PDF, buy the POD and send me proof of both purchases then I will give you a Gift Certificate of $2 to reflect the Bundle Price. Send emails to soltakss at yahoo dot com and don't forget to include the email address you use for DTRPG purchases and screenshots of your DTRPG Orders.

I got this a few days ago and it's marvelous! I really like how it's largely system agnostic. That makes it much easier for me to tailor it to whichever game I want.

Hi José

I am not sure why people cannot add a rating. that was definitely not my intention.

I will do some digging and try to get it changed.

It looks as though people can leave reviews and ratings, but not if they have an author account.

FAQ

Q: Is this canonical?
A: No, nothing in the Jonstown Compendium is canonical, which is kind of the point of it. But it is out now and is playable.

Q: Is this based on the Campaign Guide that Chaosium are working on?
A: No, I have not see the Campaign Guide and am not aware of its contents, except for what Jeff has mentioned in conversation or what has been posted in forums. However, I doubt if the official HeroQuesting rules would be very different to these. My expectation is that they will be slimmed down a bit and HeroQuesting would not be as formal.

Q: What Rules does this cover?
A: The HeroQuesting rules themselves are systemless, but some rules are given in RQG and HQ/QW formats to illustrate how they can be used in those games.

Like the other Secrets tome, a PoD would be great. It's a catch 22 that it has ti be high volume to do it, but...
I think even a percentage of PDF cost back, to keep it above the PoD cost, would be fine.

Hi Tim

I would hopefully give some kind of discount to a POD discount for those who purchased the PDF, if that is possible. It depends on whether DTRPG can do that.

However, it needs to be an Electrum Seller first, which might take a while.

I have been waiting for over 40 years for this information, so I hope you'll excuse my being a little leery. Is this canonical? We heard so many times that this information was just around the corner and were continually disappointed. Could it finally be happening?

Hi Noah

This is a Jonstown Compendium supplement, so is not canonical.

However, it is the result of my nearly 40 years experience of HeroQuesting in Glorantha, under RuneQuest and HeroQuest/QuestWorlds.

My opinion is that it should be pretty close to the official view, but will differ in style, terminology and content.

The Campaign Guide from Chaosium should contain information on HeroQuesting and on Becoming a Hero, but I don't know if that will come out his year, next year or even later.

Secrets of HeroQuesting contains playable guidelines to what HeroQuests are, how they are structured and how to run them.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Frank. I am planning to bring out a number of supplements containing fully-developed HeroQuests, beginning with secrets of HeroQuesting: Storm. That should have a load of Storm Tribe HeroQuests. The Hill of Gold and the Lightbringers' Quest are also planned, all being well.

Noah, I suggest you check out the heroquesting section of Simon's website: http://www.soltakss.com/indexheroquesting.html

If you like what you see there, you'll love this book. But you can make up your own mind. I think he's done a great job.

Thanks Nick.

I might be restructuring the website, to point to Secrets of Dorastor and Secrets of HeroQuesting, rather than keeping the existing articles online.

But, they definitely give a flavour of what is in Secrets of HeroQuesting, even if much has changed for the supplement.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
