No one would have believed, in the closing years of the 1970’s, that science fiction was to experience a boom that would last through to the present day. The summer blockbuster had only just been invented. There was only one Star Wars movie. The voyage of the Battlestar Galactica had only just begun, and Buck Rogers had yet to conquer television. But between the pages of the Terran Trade Authority handbooks, enthralled readers were discovering a beautiful and brightly-coloured vision of the future, where wondrous spacecraft explored strange planets, navigated shimmering nebulae and fought desperate battles among the stars. Illustrated by some of the world’s greatest science fiction artists and written by Stewart Cowley, the handbooks told the tale of mankind’s expansion into the unknown and the trials and wonders they encountered. Conceived of as a “Jane’s Guide” for the future, the books made use of the stunning artwork produced for the paperback science fiction market at the time, reproducing them in lush colour and on glossy paper. Beginning with Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD in 1978, the Terran Trade Authority series went on to become a cult phenomenon, loved and fondly remembered by all who came across them. The Terran Trade Authority presented a bright vision of the future, optimistic about man's place in the universe, and featuring a strong undercurrent of mystery, wonder and adventure. In recent years the volumes have become collectors’ items – expensive and rarely found, but never forgotten - and have gone on to influence creators around the globe. The setting has spawned two role-playing games and has been cited as a clear inspiration for the best-selling computer game No Man's Sky. Within the pages of the books are a veritable who’s who of science fiction art, including such names as Jim Burns, Bob Layzell, Colin Hay, Tony Roberts, Alan Daniels, Angus McKie, Peter Goodfellow, and, of course, Stewart Cowley. Now, with your help, we are proud to present a special 40th Anniversary Edition of the first of the TTA handbooks; Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD. It’s time to return to the future!

Pubishers Note: This book was created from scans of an original, as the original artwork did not survive the years. It is entirely possible that the book has images that are not as sharp as the original book. However, it is prudent to also note that this version of the book passed inspection by Stewart Cowley and the Artists. We do appreciate your purchase.

I bought the original printings for most of these books back in the day. As far as I am concerned they are wonderful books in the sense they are in no way attached to any of the "modern" SF universes. These and a few others give a new twist on the future in space.

$55 for a 92 page hardcover? That seems pretty excessive.

If you've never seen it in person, you'll be shocked. It's more of a coffee-table style book, with full page illustrations and text to explain what each piece means in-universe. It's also high-quality artwork, and printing costs have gone up substantially over the years.

Would be tempted by a Premium Color version, as that would definitely sharpen up the image quality

Have to say, as a fan of the original this edition doesn't do it justice. The pages are warped and bendy, and the color reproduction isn't up to par. A shame that a 40th anniversary edition is so bland.

Sounds like you got a bad copy. Mine has none of those issues.

Wow! One of my favorite illustrated sci-fi book series, when I was a kid. Still got all 4 of the books, including my 1979 softcover original of this book (much battered and dog-eared)..... which brings me to a question. My 1979 edition has 96 pages - this is listed as 92 pages. What is different about this edition? Is this a faithful reproduction (for a start the cover is different)?

The cover is different because there was some issues with the original works. The creation of this book was done through taking an original apart and scanning things in as high res. The interior is as exact as we could make it. Including the text and spellings. The entries are in the same order. My guess is that the difference in size has a lot to do with the font we used.

This is some nostalgia, here. In another life (as a 13-year-old SF nerd), I bought this when it was first released. My copy has been lost to the mists of time. The original was very high quality. If they have managed to replicate that, it would be a very worthy buy for any fan of space SF. There was nothing game related, but it did stir the imagination.

Stewart and the artists are happy with it, so I figure that is a ringing endorsement.

Well, that is a worthless "Full-Size Preview". At least one of the images should be shown so that a potential buyer can gauge the quality.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
