MCE was originally designed as a complement to the Motif Story Engine

The Motif Character Engine is a modular character and player emulator:

  • Relies on a series of "templates" and characteristics to help seed behavior.
  • Uses a simple backbone of 3d6 rolls.
  • Mix and match "flavors" to produce a wide variety of behavior and action results.
  • Ask questions about characters just as you would ask a player or story narrator.
  • Simple results and lists that drive your story without getting in the way.
  • Extensible, easily hacked and reskinned for a variety of genres and play styles.

V2 Updates!

  • Errata fixes
  • Extensive text revisions
  • All new scalable Groups patch!

A series of toolkits that enable GM-less, GM-lite "no prep", and solo roleplaying. They are modular and easily hackable. They are also game agnostic! Use them to enable GM-less and solo play with your favorite games.

Picked this up recently. Just want to reiterate the questions from below that havent been answered. Are there a list of generators for each of the characteristics of the templates? Ie for Motives, a list of motives, etc..

There is the character template with motives etc, and then there are the character engine oracles, but I have no idea how the former is supposed to influence the latter. I suppose if character motive is greed and the statue in the dungeon seems to have eyes made out of rubys, I'd suppose that should influence the character oracles, but I don't see how. Similarly with the player template.

I agree, the lack of examples in the book really hurts its chances as there's not a lot of Player/Character Emulator actual plays (apart from a singular article that uses Player Emulator with Tags).

Do you have any examples of play? The system itself is explained but there are no examples which would greatly help in understanding how and why to use it. Many tools like this have pages of examples to ease new users into the system. As it stands it seems fairly complex and doesn't seem to add a lot more than a standard Oracle but I suspect I am missing the finer points. I am interested in using it to emulate companions or sidekicks to my main PC in a solo campaign. I find it easy to decide what they do in response to events and if not I use an Oracle. What I really want is something to generate input from them. Interactions between the group to improve the immersion.

I'm new to DTRPG so I have to ask, how do I receive the update if I have already bought the product?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
