Hollow Land is an inclusive role-playing game of mystery and adventure, set in an alternate steampunk version of our history. It is a tale of underdogs and overwhelming odds, of emerging technology, forgotten folklore and colonial devastation, in which you, and your friends, travel the world to try and unlock the secrets of history.

The world of Hollow Land will remind you of stories like Adèle Blanc-Sec, Penny Dreadful,The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the tales of Jules Verne.

The Quickstart Guide includes an abbreviated version of the setting rules, some tips on playing, as well as an introductory adventure called: The Cowardly Murder of Laurentia Vrolik, which will give you about 2-3 sessions of 3 hours worth of playing time (depending on your style & preference).

The adventure will take your players to the Hague, the Netherlands in 1869 where they will find themselves in the middle of mystery, murder and mayhem.

If the Kickstarter for the Hollow Land main campaign is successful, the world is open to your adventurers and they will be free to explore the continents by zeppelin, carriage or steam ship. They may even find themselves in places that aren’t on any maps known to man...

PURCHASER

Is this a real roleplaying game or another political statement game like the Snowflake RPG? I noticed preferred pronoun being included on the character sheet, the section on colonialism in the introduction, and the very first thing being said in the description here being "inclusive."

Those things being included aren't bad things, that's not what I'm getting at. What I'm getting at is the prominence of them as opposed to narrative and/or mechanics being emphasized seems strange. It gives the impression of a RPG where neither roleplaying nor gaming is the main thrust of the project. I do like alternate history so the setting interests me. I just want to know this is an actual game meant to played as a storytelling and gaming experience, and not a means for exploring social issues before I invest time in reading it. I realize that sort of thing is important to some gamers, but I just want fun and adventure from my gaming and not a reflection of the ills of the real world.

Hi Patrick, this is a real (and in my personal opinion) fairly awesome role playing game. It does indeed aim to be inclusive, and as such, includes many options to that regard. But in its essence, it is a role playing game with strong emphasis on the story, the setting, the atmosphere and the characters within. It is not written as a means as such to go exploring social issues, though they may be touched upon where relevant. I assume that is also in a great part dependant on the view and approach of the game's Historian. So though you can chose to tackle some of the social ills of those days, that is not the game's main intention or the goal.

At least, that's my take on it ;)
I vastly recommend reading it all the way through.

I received the download yesterday and it reads like a really rich and well-though-out setting, that feels like an exciting mix of history and... something else (not sure yet, something supernatural?) If you read the intro, you'll understand why the parts on inclusion/colonialism are added, since 19th century Holland wasn't all that hot if you were a woman/migrant/worker of low income (as I understand it, votes and social/political power were only for the very, very rich upperclass and most of the country was basically a slum). Because it's an adventure/mystery/supernatural game that should be enjoyable for all characters, not only the ones that could afford to travel/vote/buy stuff, there's an added empowerment that wasn't there for real. (Though I guess, yeah, if you're really looking for something purely fantasy devoid-of-any-social-issues, you should give this one a miss, since it's partly history? :D And things like poverty, social unrest, progress and inventions were a big part of that)

I didn't interpret it as a Snowflake RPG. More like an RPG that aims to introduce mature and possibly sensitive topics, and wants to warn for that. If you look at how easy it is for people to get 'insulted' on a wide range of things nowadays, I can understand that they want to add an extra disclaimer. So I read it more as an "even though slavery is real in our setting, we do not condone this in real life" kind of thing. To keep the baying hounds at bay ;-).
Since I'll probably play this only with people I know well, I fully intend to use these topics to force my players/historian (based on whether I play or DM) to make some gut-wrenching decisions ;-).
