Create rich narrative stories with friends in less than 15 minutes ! 3S - Simple Story System - is a set of generic RPG rules encouraging roleplay by focusing on simplicity and storytelling:

  • Short yet complete rules for oneshot as well as campaigns.
  • Core rules and character incarnation sheet on the same page.
  • Unique incarnation system that allows you to carry out learnings from past experience when your current character exits the story.
  • Incarnation described by ambivalent aspects that favor rich roleplay even for beginners.
  • Peril system where player roll only once, avoiding back and forth in combat and focusing on narrative aspects of the story.
  • Overcoming perils through simple 3D6 rolls where players use their skills and the situation to manipulate dice results.
  • Outcomes favoring dilemmas where it's sometimes best to fail and learn rather than succeeding with complication.
  • Gaining experience - or learnings - through failures as in real life.

Hello!

After further consideration, there are two questions that have risen:

1. How do you suggest handling situations, where the incarnation still has reserve left, no rewinds, but a failure would obviously be fatal (like defusing a time bomb). Do you suggest just killing off the incarnation on a failure (and thus starting a new incarnation), or would you put plot armor in place to give meaning to the choice of failure?

2. What do you mean by "revisit an aspect of the story so far" under REWIND? I think that really needs some more explanation.

Yours,
Deathworks

Hello again Ranjith,
1. Yes, either you roll the dice and take the risk of re-incarnation or... you could try to re-frame the situation to create aspects so you could avoid failure or make sure failure is not fatal. In the "defuse a bomb" example, you could try to find a protection against the explosion, ask for a contact/friend's help, take the time analyze the bomb to see if there's a weakness. The game master should also acknowledge you're in a tense situation and if he/she could ease it for you, or not ;-)
2. Yes, sorry, it wasn't clear. What I meant is that you can change something about what happened so far so as to create a more positive situation, usually making possible something that wasn’t before. For example, you brought some equipment that wouldn't be obvious given your aspects, you know a guy, etc.
I just uploaded a update which you should receive shortly :)
Thanks again, your comments are super useful to help me understand how I can improve.

Hello!

I just downloaded this and skimmed over it, so no play experience yet.

First thing I noticed is that you don't comment much on settings. While you suggest using it as a replacement for other RPG systems, in effect using their setting, the incarnations mechanism seems quite interesting to me hinting at least at a mechanical aspect of a setting. What I mean is that it sets up a world (or set of worlds) where characters are re-incarnated, be that like Moorcock's Eternal Champion in a multiple world way, or in a single world like in Xenoscape. It would be interesting if you gave more information on what you think about that aspect.

Secondly, without doing any proper math, I got the impression that the odds are kind of stacked against you. I suppose that is deliberate considering the learning mechanism and the re-incarnation bit. That's just something I noticed as most systems are either more or less 50/50 or slightly favour you.

Third, considering the inspiration...See more

Hello Ranjith,
Thanks so much for your comments and praises on how refreshing 3S can be :-). Let me get back to your three points:
- First, settings: yes I agree with you that the re-incarnation mechanism can be especially suited when re-incarnation is already a thing in the world you play in. That being said, it's more a keyword that I used to tell players "it's ok if you character dies, or go broke, or get in jail because you'll get back right after that with little or no loss".
- Second, "Don't tell me the odds". Yes again you're right that I'm deliberately trying to deplete players reserve. My main objective here is to incentivize players to create aspects that will ease challenges enough, or avoid rolling dices altogether. Basically, I'm trying to get players to frame situations in ways they can handle or create more interesting stories this way. Worse situation, they end up with no reserve and re-incarnate.
- Third, solo. I agree with you and it's indicated in...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
