Olde Swords Reign is a classic fantasy adventure game, based on the 5e rules and the 1974 rules and supplements. Featuring 4 original-era classes and 4 races, over 100 spells, 100 monsters and magic items from armors to wands.

Based on the 5e SRD the game features the modern mechanics of the current edition of the worlds oldest roleplaying game but feels like the classic version of the same game.

Two PDF files are included, a full rulebook and an edited players handbook (that just includes all of the player related rules).

Adventure awaits.

Sorry I have several other questions:
1. Can I ask the what is the difference between the Amazon version and the PoD?
2. Is the Amazon version in offset printing?
3. Is the Amazon version softcover or Hardcover?
4. Are there any changes between the Amazon version and the upcoming PoD, such as minor correction on typos or updates?
I am trying to figure out what is the difference between Amazon and what will be the PoD version. Thanks

No worries. The Amazon version is 8.5x11 inches and in softcover only, the POD here (and Lulu) is 7 x 10 inches and in hardcover only. There are no real differences between the three versions content wise.

The Amazon version is also print on demand so not offset print.

That's good to know, thank you! I prefer smaller and hardcover so will wait for it to come out! Thanks

Just approved for sale again for the print on demand so it should be available now.

When the PoD returns, will there be a hardcover option?

Yes, it’ll only be in hardcover on here, just waiting on my proof copy (was shipped yesterday) and when it arrives I will ok it and it will be available again. Make sure you email me before you buy and I will send you a discount code to take the price of the pdf off of the book. Scottgeg @ Gmail.com

Hi there, I am interested in this book but a little confuse how it may work. Can it run old school TSR B or X series module or does it run modern days 5e adventures like Tales of the Yawning Portal or Waterdeep Dungeon of the Mad Mage type adventures? Thanks

It could easily run both, there's an appendix in the back that explains how to convert any old school monsters or 5e monsters to it.

If this is not a 'true old school game,' what niche does this game occupy? What differentiates Olde Swords Reign from base 5E? What is the FEEL of the game, especially compared to base 5E?

Differences are... characters are way less powerful (comparable to od&d hit point wise), same with monsters; the spells, equipment, magic items, and classes are old school and based on the 74 rules. It feels, and runs, like an old school game with modern mechanics.

It is however based on the 5e SRD, with minimal changes to the 5e mechanics. The full size preview contains most of the book to check out.

I'm intrigued by this one. But in the preview it looks like you repeatedly used the same image in your chapter headers? It is a cool image, but to see it so many times kinda bugs me. I feel the same about ornamental page borders though... lol. Most of the art looks pretty good and I appreciate that you showed a lot of it. Is the monster section also stocked with interesting art?

If anyone knows of a flipthrough vid, please post a link here.

Each section of the book (there are 3) has a repeating chapter image semi-based on the 1974 rulebooks. The monster section has maybe 20 pieces of art in it. Same with the treasure section after.

I really wanted to like this.

Very disappointed with the 5e ability score bonuses compared with the old AC scores. This game seems to hate the idea that armour might actually protect its wearer.

Maybe a revision could include either reduced proficiency bonuses or reduced ability scores.

5e ability scores stayed intact so it’s playable on any VTT with a 5e ruleset (which is all of them), without having to do coding. Same with proficiency bonuses.

Sorry you didn’t dig it if you hit me up by email I’ll get ya a refund. scottgeg@gmail.com

For anyone that does read this the rules of the game are very much based on a simplified version of 5e. Combats are fast. You heal after every combat if you can catch your breath for a minute. You get hit a lot, and you hit things a lot. Hours and hours of playtesting went into the game, but if you are looking for a true old school game, this is not it.

Reading through, this looks great. I did notice in the Inspiration section it states you gain inspiration by acting true to your personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws. As these are not mentioned anywhere else in the rules (the nearest thing is alignment) it seems odd if you don't have the 5e rules as well. Maybe change the working, or a little explanation in this section or the chargen section about may help ?

Great idea, thanks for catching that, it must’ve been missed in the editing process. It should read alignment, using your background, doing something heroic, etc.

I am keeping track and fixing any errata like this for an updated pdf when there are enough of them. I have caught a few things today as I work on a fantasy grounds module for it.

Sorry to be a bother - using the encumbrance rules, do the three armours all weigh the same, the way I read it it's as if each weighs as 1 item ?
Customer avatar
Scott M March 29, 2021 5:47 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
No bother at all, but I just keep track of everything as one item for simplicity. The plate armor already has the stealth penalty and the strength requirement, so I just let it slide as one item. Feel free to join the Facebook group listed in the book also to discuss anything you ever have questions on.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
