The Chronicles of Aeres Setting Handbook

The Chronicles of Aeres is an unofficial, high fantasy world and campaign setting for 5th Edition. It's an old-school setting packed with nostalgia for the golden age of fantasy media and RPGs, with influences from Tolkien, Redwall, Dragonlance, the Dark Crystal, and beyond. We wanted to crack open the time capsule and breathe new life back into these old-fashioned fantasy sensibilities, this time for 5E!

This handbook contains everything you need to create a fleshed out character or an action-packed adventure within the world. It's a full-fledged setting, with fairytale-like races, NPCs, classes, and destinations all adhering to a cohesive theme and overarching saga. Within, you'll find:

  • 350+ pages of content with full color illustrations from over 20 talented artists. Many full-page, atmospheric pieces!
  • 18 fleshed out races and cultures--including new twists on familiar tropes, from rune-powered dwarfs, adventurous ratfolk, mysterious kobolds, and more. We don't just shoe-horn in races and give them a two-paragraph lip service. Each culture has unique artwork, a ton of story and flavor, and lots of new thematic gameplay abilities.
  • 3 new player classes based on mythology--the Witch, the Dreamcaller, and the Alchemist. The Witch follows either the Left Hand Path or Right Hand Path, and they can levy powerful and unique hexes and curses. The Alchemist bestows transmutations on inanimate objects, causing them to burst with potent magic. And the Dreamcaller summons apparitions from dreams and nightmares to aid them in battle.
  • A colorful pantheon of fully illustrated gods and goddesses with personalities and histories of their own, along with new systems like rune-words and tarot cards, that you can use to add flavor to your games.
  • An extensive history and lore of the realm, and a full roster of NPCs, new monsters, heroes, and villains, all geared with adventure hooks in mind. Almost everything is fully illustrated, but there's still plenty left for your imagination!
  • Our gazetteer covers every destination on the Aeres world map, and each area has at least one quest hook to aid you in building action, social, or even mystery-centered adventures.
  • Two introductory adventures of 1 to 2-session length that GMs can run out of the box. These are great for starting players and include destinations and enemies unique to Aeres.

The return of heroic adventure awaits! We hope that you find all of the new features in the Chronicles of Aeres fun and exciting, and we hope that it can re-spark something in your imagination!

Strange, there was a preview set for this and for the Wilderkind book and now it's missing. I'll try to re-add it.

Minor error to give you a head's up on; in the Alchemist's class/level table, the Sigils/Transmutations Active header is misspelled as "Sigils/Transutations Active".

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I'm honestly thrilled that the book has as few errors as it does; it was a monumental proofreading task.

A quick question about a possible error; in the Argent Draconvir's racial writeup, their XXX attack does "bludgeoning piercing" damage, and their breath weapon does "radiant fire" damage? Are these supposed to be hybrid damage types and I missed an entry on how that's handled earlier in the book, or is that an error (the breath weapon does radiant damage but ignites flammable objects, for example)?

Also, are you entirely sure the argent draconvir's breath weapon has the right damage values? I mean, I know I've always considered the PHB dragonborn to have rather lackluster stats, but the draconvir's breath weapon does massively more damage, even considering that Aeres is a more high-powered game compared to baseline 5e.

This is correct, these are attacks that deal two damage types simultaneously. And yes I wanted their breath weapon to be very powerful to make them more dragon-like. GMs feel free to adjust, however; the Imperators have damage resistance right out of the gate and they are everywhere in the world.

And if you want to know how to handle that, if you're up against a foe with resistance to one damage type but not the other, the ability would deal 25% less damage, rather than 50%. Within the lore, this was the only way the Argent Draconvir were able to defeat the Vulgraks' Draconvir Overlords.

Okay, thank you for clarifying; is there a specific page in the rulebook that calls out how to handle dual-typed damage vs. Resistance and Vulnerability? Because it's a mechanic sorely lacking in the 5e PHB.

There's not, I could perhaps add a blurb in a future revision, but it's a situation that probably won't come up very often.

Fellow Kickstarter backer here, glancing through yesterday it looks like some of the final entries in the "Ares Bestiary" section aren't represented in the table of contents. It was a quick glance, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Kickstarter backer here, been reading the book and quite enjoying it, but... the Hinterfolk entry is missing the first half of the racial trait that gives them Advantage on Constitution saves/checks and Insight checks? Like, I don't even know what it's called because it's missing the name as well? It's on page 135.

Good catch! This error is not in previous revisions for some reason. I'll upload a new copy within the hour.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
