Sympathy for the Devil

5e adventure by Elven Tower

Banner.png

In Sympathy for the Devil, a group of level-3 adventurers meets Daniel Sands, the sacred healer. The former priest worked as a doctor in the region and one day was visited by Yal, a devil. Clever Yal promised Daniel real power and magic to cure and heal people. The human accepted for his only goal was to help others.

This adventure shall test minds and hearts. The healer and Yal become one, and they are surrounded by dozens of followers that have formed a cult. They were all crippled and withered old people waiting for death; Daniel gave them back their health and a purpose in life. But their health comes with a price; a subconscious loyalty to the devil. Daniel's entourage will do everything for him. Plus, killing the healer would undo every cure and return the townsfolk to their former state of health.

How many sessions would you say this adventure is meant to last? 3? 5?

Roughly two or three. This adventure in particular has alternatives for resolving each combat encounter without violence. If the party all chooses to not fight each time. The adventure will be considerably short.

So sorry, after a bad experience 'Roll20 map' makes me think horrific quality maps at 10mb or less. You would be much better off telling people that they are VTT maps. Also, you'd be better off just listing out the VTT maps (as VTT maps) and telling people the grid size (30x20) and the DPI/PPI. If you can gave us maps at 140 or 150 PPI nad 90% quality, I'll buy the module right now. If they're at 70 PPI with horrific quality to fit in Roll20.. well.. no thank you. :)

we understand James. The maps are included all in 140px per square. Specifically, the Roll20 version is sized down to 5mb due to the platform's specs. That is low quality but it's what Roll20 takes. The other maps are not sized down but they are not so large that the final size is that different.

I'd gladly send you a free sample of the maps and then you can make your mind for yourself.

Oh no, that's fine! I'm more than happy to pay for the whole module. When I'm rooting around for VTT content, I just like to know that I'm getting decent quality maps, not crappy 'Roll20' quality. ;)

That's why I suggested that you change your title to say 'VTT' so that people would know that your package will work with any modern VTT platform, not just Roll20. :)

Also, I can take a quality 300DPI image and reduce it down to 150PPI @90% quality for myself. Actually, the only difference would be if YOU are happier with the quality of your maps at 91% or 93% quality.. then I would reduce it to that.

Of course, ideally, you just have one set of standard VTT maps and one set of print maps in the module. Then you can just add a Roll20 map for anything that ends up too big. That way, YOU can control the quality of your maps in all environments. :)

Of course, the Roll20 thing is kind of a conundrum, because if you have to sacrifice that much quality, the map isn't...See more

Thanks for the elaborate reply James. I don't really like defining them in DPI terms since they're not meant for print. But to give you exact data. The main dungeon map here is 30x20 squares. It's a cave dungeon. It was made at a resolution of 4200x2800, which translates to 140 pixels per squares, which is what Roll20 uses as a base. The "roll20 version" in the folder has been scaled down in quality to be below 5 mb. But the other non-scaled versions are like 6 mb since the full size isn't that large anyway.

Included are the following, all maps are 30x20 suares (5 feet per square in-game):

*** Map 1 - Tavern map
-DM version with labels. 4200x2800 px, 6mb
-PC version without labels. 4200x2800 px, 6mb
-Roll20 version, downscaled to under 5mb

*** Map 2 - Forest Encounter map
-DM version with labels. 4200x2800 px, 7mb
-PC version without labels. 4200x2800 px, 7mb
-Roll20 version, downscaled to under 5mb

*** Map 3 - Cave...See more

Too late, I bought it anyway. :D I prefer every asset I own be on DTRPG, that way I can source everything when I need to. :)

You don't HAVE to use the term DPI, it's just what people know. most of them will understand 'px' just fine. :)

My suggestion would be to name your files like so:
Tavern_Map_DM_30x20_140px.jpg
Tavern_Map_PC_30x20_140px.jpg
Tavern_Map_PC_30x20_Roll20-140px.jpg

Instead of a low quality map, most authors would do the Roll20 maps at 70px, and retain the quality to keep visual artifacts to a minimum:
Tavern_Map_DM_30x20_70px.jpg

TOTALLY your call though, you're the artist. :)

The reason for calling out both the grid size (30x20) and the ppi (140px) is because every VTT on the planet uses one of the two to automatically size maps. That's the whole reason why producing gridded maps for VTT use is completely redundent now.

I was actually unaware that they had reduced their map size from 10mb to...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
