Mothership: The Haunting of Ypsilon 14
by Nicholas H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/22/2021 13:33:43

This is the most densely packed game I've ever had the pleasure of running. Two pages of info give you everything you need to understand the characters and adventure setting. The map provides much of the adventure info so make sure you read through all the room descriptions in advance so you know how it all ties together. This game does rely on the GM to have pretty decent improv skills - there's a ton of good info here but there's definitely work to be done to actually RUN it. This makes it very flexible but also perhaps overwhelming for folks who like modules to hold their hands a bit more. If that's the case for you I suggest taking some time beforehand to fill in those blanks. What are the characters doing here? What's the situation when they arrive? What are the NPCs doing and feeling when they arrive? Those are left wide open and you may want to decide on these things in advance. There are also a bunch of great online resources availale for folks who want ideas on how to run the game. I'm probably not allowed to advertise those here but I highly suggest looking into them to help make this module really shine! Not necessary though, I think the module stands on its own just fine.

The average stat is 33. The highest tier skill you can get at character creation is "expert" which adds 15%. So the average space marine is sent out on their first assignment with just under a 50% chance to hit, and that's if they spend two of their three skill points on Firearms training.

Listen, I get it. Horror genre, everybody dies. But there has to be a way to tell stories about competent people being overwhelmed by powerful horrors, rather than schmoes who go down because they're completely incompetent. This game is one long exercise in frustration.

Mothership: A Pound of Flesh
by Michael D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/13/2021 16:33:02

This is the best rpg book I've ever read. I usually do not have the patience to actually 'read' rpg content, usually just skimming it and taking what's important. But this book actually hooked me. The art is fantastic to say the least. Everything is organized in a way that makes it very easy to read. Unlike most books, this one actually has content that I find useful and imaginative. I've used it several times, both for the stories and plots it provides as well as the tools for making stations. It has genuinely improved my ability to GM.

Sorry if this seems overly intense, I just really like this book. I ordered a physical copy which I practically never do (at great shipping expense hahaha). I also highly recommend checking out the authors' blogs, they have tons of good content. This is probably the geekiest review I've ever written but seriously check this book out, it's more than worth it.

side note: as a nonbinary person I genuinelly appreciate the representation. It means more to me than I can express.

For what you get, the $1.99 price point is more than reasonable. It's too bare-bones for me to run without prep (I think doing so would result in things rushing along too quickly, and even in a one-shot you don't want that!), but with a little prep, it makes for an excellent intro to Mothership.

Pros -The layout is perfect. Everything is easy to find and no space is wasted. The map (for what it is) works. -The monster. In combination with the goo, the doctor, and perhaps a few other infected crew members, there was just the right amount of threats to keep the game fun and exciting. -The atmosphere. It's unapologetically "Alien", right down to the cat - but that's not a bad thing at all. -Diversity. This really is the perfect starter - you need ALL the skills, tools, and tricks Mothership employs (outside of the confusing spaceship stuff, which is probably better avoided on an introductory playthrough!) No one feels left out. After this game, your players will know if they like Mothership and want more, or don't.

Cons -Introduction. It's really hard to say how the module should start. If the crew is begging your PCs for help with a missing person, then you've got a lot of NPCs that would naturally be huddling together, scared. How's the monster supposed to deal with that? If they aren't aware of the missing crewmember, then what are your PCs supposed to do while the NPCs go about their business, getting picked off slowly to raise the tension? Once things get going the module is lovely, but this obstacle must be overcome first.

A good warden (or a well-prepped one) will have no problem with that slight con. This module is still the best Mothership supplement, and is a must-play.

This was plain great. In very few rules it sets a full feeling for the kind of game this is. It is very deadly and very intense. I look forward to keep playing it.

On the bad side: At very specific points it wasn't clear if high numbers were good or bad but, again, it was at very specific moments. I think it just takes a bit familiarity with the game

It seemed very bare bones at first, and it is. But knowing a bit about the influences, obviously Alien, it's pretty cool and straight forward.

It was tense, and indeed scary at times. I ran it and I think I could have used some more familiarity with the system, because it was the first time we played, but it was a very good jumpstart point. I really recommend this module

Mothership is great, sure it's a quick, ruleslight space horror game, but as a product it's also very well designed. A masterful use of layout and brevity to create an easy to learn and play system with a fair bit of depth.

Mothership: Player's Survival Guide

The Mothership PSG is messy, wonderful, disorganized, intuitive, counterintuitive, etc. House rules are required to make the system work fluidly (use the excellent ones on Traaash), and the financial system in the game is broken. Ships repairs cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of credits, while ammo and gear is incredibly cheap. And yet, ships clearly are intended to be an important part of the system, given the large part of the book devoted to them.

As for enemy units? They aren't here - the most you'll find are some mercenary tables with thin descriptions on how to use them. Thin descriptions are the order of the day for much of Mothership - this is clearly a game in its first, early state.

That isn't to say that excuses it completely. We're not just beta testers - we're hoping to have fun in a scary, sci-fi setting. I'm happy to report that Mothership IS fun, but it's not for the timid. While your players battle the incredible stress and panic system (a true highlight), you'll be battling your own brand of stress: how do I make this game work? Take their skills system - a lot of it looks like usefulness will be based around warden discretion. Not true! If you scour the PSG, you'll find little mentions of HOW most skills get their usage. Why are these descriptions scattered aimlessly through the book? No clue.

Take as an example the skill of "Firearms." It doesn't say what it DOES. Then, a few pages later, with the weapons, a note! If a weapon has (Firearms +10) in its description, a PC with that skill may add their skill benefit when firing. Unfortunately, none of the weapons HAVE Firearms in their description...

I wouldn't recommend Mothership as a jumping point for a new warden, or even for a group looking for a new game to campaign in. As a system for one shots, though? Perfect. They've even developed a good one in Ypsilon 14, also sold here for quite cheap. I'd wait and see what comes next for Mothership for anything longer, though. This game has a galaxy of promise.

Mothership: Dead Planet
by JD S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/30/2020 13:46:15

Sci fi adventures are hard to find, so I'm a bit more generous with this product than I normally would be.

Cons While art is of little importance to me, the art in this product is simply pathetic. Really, really bad.

The formatting is awful. Entire pages are neon pastels, apparently to ensure that you won't print the document.

Several lengthy entries are duplicated, apparently for no other reason than to pad page count. This was not an accident, because they are formatted differently.

The deck plans provided assume starships will be shaped like snowflakes. Why this is, is not explained.

The cannibal colony is equipped with a device that launches a harpoon, trailing 60+ MILES of cable, to hook and drag ships out of a low luna orbit. How they aquired such a device, the power plant required to launch such a load, and then drag the aforementined snowflake-shaped ships out of orbit (again, a minimum of 60 miles up) is not explained. Especially since these same cannibals' next biggest program is raising goats.

The writers apparently think that tables are the way to GM a game. Decisions, apparently, are consdidered to be difficult. This would not nessessarily be bad, except that the table entries range from dumb to farcical. For one moderate example, you can encounter a bulk hauler loaded with ceramic garden gnomes. Because apparently there are planets which desire huge amounts (tens of thousands) of garden gnomes, and have the capacity to build a starport, but do not know how to work clay.

The pdf is not bookmarked.

Nothing is covered in depth. There are some really decent ideas, but they never go beyond a brief statement.

There are a lot of really bad and downright goofy ideas put forth. For one example, if the PCs will not willingly undergo amputation in order to interact with the colonists, the book notes that the cannibals will sneak onto the PCs ship and disable the life support. Because apparently the PCs would never think to lock their hatches, or leave someone aboard.

Pros The authors do a good job of cross-referencing data.

There are some really great ideas included, and a workable outline of a plot, but there is zero depth of explanation or development.

Overall Overall, this is an extremely superfical document with many grossly immature ideas and zero background research. If your group is made up of adults with basic education, you are going to have to put in a lot of work to making this scenario playable.

Mothership: Dead Planet
by James T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/26/2020 15:56:05

An excellent (award winning) module for a great RPG system.

The book contains three scenarios set around and on the titular Dead Planet which can be run as one shots or a part of a campaign. The information in the book is concisely written and well presented so that you can run each game with only a couple of pages open at a time. The art is good, giving a feel for the aesthetic of the setting. It has an intentionally indy feel that is a breath of fresh air and adds visual interest without getting in the way of the content; and this is one book which does not stint on the content.

Each scenario is chock full of ideas, with plenty to inspire that play through and leave you thinking of spin off games. Random ship building mechanics are a joy, and something I can see returning to again and again. I found the scenarios have the right amount of detail to run and not over elaborate on the ideas presented, leaving plenty of room for me to interpret them for my table. The setting is "soft" sci fi, but you could wrap it around a hard science setting realitevly easily if thats more your jam.

Picking up on a previous review it is worth pointing out that one or two of the themes are graphic, maybe a 12 rating, but you could easily cut it out. In any RPG it is advisable to know your groups comfort zones before playing, doubly so with a horror setting.
