I'm relatively new to DnD 5e, having played for the better part of a year. I have two boys, 12 and 7, who have seemed interested in playing, but both have the attention span of a pickle, so I knew that full fledged 5e rules would simply be too much. After doing a search, I stumbled on Fairies of the Mistglade and decided to give it a try.
As someone who has never DM'd before, I wasn't really sure how well I would do, but the story is simple enough to grasp with only two NPC's, so I felt like I could manage. I actually decided to use PowerPoint to help me organize everything, and converted an old display into a digital map that I could utilize for encounters.
The tiered system worked out really well for the kids. We tried out the tier II rule set. While I think my older son was a little disappointed that he wouldn't roll any dice, he was still able to enjoy himself. I also ended up adding a couple of extra encounters, because I knew the kids wanted to do some battles. Neither character had a healing ability, but my older son's character was a mage who had access to "nature magic", so I allowed him to use his imagination to create and act out a ritual spell that used nature to heal the party after their first encounter. So, in that regard, I feel like the rules are flexible enough to encourage imaginative problem solving.
All that said, both boys had a lot of fun with this. The campaign is chopped up into chapters, most of which are pretty short. So they can be combined in a way that you can split the whole campaign up into multiple sessions, depending on the kid's attention span. We ended up doing three sessions total.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to get their kids into some TTRPG. It is straight forward enough that you can run the campaign as is, but also flexible enough that you can be creative with it. I went ahead and purchased the other FotM content and look forward to getting playing them as well!
To the author, I hope you decide to relaunch your kickstarter! I would definitely support!
