DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures
by Kyle [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/20/2023 12:08:26

Bought it hoping it would be less specific and more generally applicable to more RPGs, Good rules and ideas throughout, but nothing that is unique unless you're into D&D. I RECCOMEND this to anyone who wants to use the rules for D&D, I do not recommend if you were looking for anything useful for other systems.

DM Yourselves - solo and GM-less roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures
by Kaarne K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/06/2023 23:43:31

An excellent toolkit for approaching solo and GM-less roleplaying, though mainly for D&D and D&D-derived systems. Thanks to the modular approach, you can use only some of the tools, combine them with other solo systems etc. I've found the Story Mode system especially useful and tinkered with the system further, with good results. The NPC AI guidelines are also useful for simulating NPC behavior in different situations.

This book is excellent. Initially I was sceptical about the author's self-DMing system; I thought that the cognitive dissonance entailed in being both a player controlling a character (plus sidekick) and a DM would render the adventuring process joyless and lacking challenge or a genuine sense of adventure. I was wrong. The simple systems sugegsted in this book (including an elegant oracle that answers questions a player may ask a DM) work brilliantly, provided you take things slowly, giving yourself plenty of time to create and develop your character, and imagine scenery, environments, monsters' appearance and behaviour, etc. As Tom Scutt acknowledges, playing published scenarious solo will inevitably lead to you stumbling upon spoilers, but they're no worse than the minor spoilers you see in a movie trailer. I also bought the sequel, DM Yourselves, and used advice in the appendix to steer me through Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, which I'm emjoying immensely. Wonderful stuff!

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/27/2022 14:02:09

This book should be in every DM & player's toolbox. It's chock full of useful ideas and tables that you can bring to the table, and easy to follow rules to, as the title says, DM yourself. I appreciated that the intro asked a very important question up front, "WHY DM yourself?" This is a social game after all, better to be played with friends. For me personally, I'm either A) Always the DM and never just a PC or B) I'm at a point in my life where work, family, pets, etc. keep me so busy it's literally impossible to commit 4 hours on a regular basis.

That's why I DM myself. I enjoy writing as well, so I'm often immersing myself in the scenes and trying to really see it from my characters perspective and live each moment of their lives. This book has a lot of easy to use mechanics that REALLY improved my experience. Choosing default behaviors, for one, really made me think harder about my PCs/protagonists and how they would generally react. How to skim an adventure to get the gist and avoid spoilers was another, allowing me to write a scene and not bias PC action because I know exactly what's coming.

Buy this book. You'll be very happy you did.

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures
by Wyatt L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/07/2022 18:17:17

I've only recently discovered the solo RPG scene, and this book came suggested as a 'gateway' of sorts - making use of published adventures even if you no longer have a group to run them for. It was inexpensive enough to take a chance on, and in the span of a single morning's efforts it demonstrated its value. Even though it's aimed at 5e - and I've got plans to use it for such - my first experience was with Fantasy Flight's narrative dice system, so at least 60% of it is system asgnostic, probably more. The suggestions on how to immerse yourself are fantastic, and the approach to published adventure reading is wonderful. Absolutely worth the price of admission.

And to get into the slightly outlandish claims - it's also managed to cure my writer's block with keeping record of the adventure thus far, and may well have also been life-changing in how I approach fantasy and fiction. Highly, highly recommended, and I'm personally grateful to the author for publishing it.

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures

When it comes to DMing yourself, pen and paper can't be beat. I love the feeling of sitting down with a printed adventure in hand, dice and character sheets, and a handy oracle to determine my fate. DM Yourself is a fantastic option for those of us looking to game but unable or unwilling to get a group together.

The .pdf is a strong one, with bookmarks for easy navigation and an easily ctrl-f-able body of content for those of us who are more digitally inclined in our solo roleplay. Speaking of the content, the new rules provided make for easy decision-making processes during play, and the oracles are flexible, allowing for a lot of creative thinking. I like the introduction of the optional "Plot Armor" rule, as it really allows for mistakes to be made at the table at a cost, but not necessarily to become game-ending.

The book is slim, with a handsomely slick cover. While I had no issues with the print, some might have concerns as to the size of the font: for those who express concern, I would highly recommend the .pdf version.

I think my favorite part of this entire little booklet is the "Combat Tactics" segment. You'll just have to read to see what I mean, but suffice it to say that anything that makes "DM-you's" decisions easier allows for more enjoyment while being "Player-you."

All in all, great little piece of tabletop information. Cannot wait to see its companion piece "DM Yourselves" out in print as well. Would love to get my partner in on this in a duet!

This book was a great read.

I've been roleplaying since the late 70s, have recently turned to solo gaming due to time limitations and learned quite a bit from this book.

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures

I've been playing TTRPG's on and off for the last 30 years, and it's been a long while since i've actually been able to play one of them, as it's very hard to find friends or colleagues to pull together, either locally or virtually. I've spent a lot of time trying to find a way to SOLO play all of the modules and content that i've collected over the last few decades, without ruining the contents. I can safely say that DM Yourself provides this functionality for me, in such an easy and straight-forward way.

I want to thank the creators of DM Yourself (and also for DM Yourselves kickstarter) for helping to make it easier to actually play again! :D

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures

This has wonderful info in it, unfortunately the font size is way too small. My book came with a binding defect, and customer service said that they can send me a new one. But, that book would have the same print issue. I've opted for my money back. The only way I can read this is to wear reading glasses over my regular glasses. I usually don't even use reading glasses.

Because of this issue, I do not recommend the pod version. It is not worth it.

DM Yourself - solo roleplay for 5e, D&D and OSR adventures
by Roger P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/19/2021 16:50:56

This book describes comprehensively a method for playing D&D 5e published adventures solo. There are some books that adress the solo rpg topic already (I would like to mention specially Kevin Crawford's Scarlet Heoes for OSR) but I would say there was a gap related to solo playing of 5e published material. The method described is solid, consistent and well structured. Obviously, as D&D is conceived for multiple players and a DM, the material by itself presents some inner dificulties to be adapted for solo playing. However, Scutt has been working on ways to adress these difficulties quite successfully, assuming some of them can't be completely overcome. One of the pilars of the method is the choice to use just one PC and a sidekick one level higher than the adventure requires, and applying some easy special rules to tackle with the adventure's challenge. Scutt emphasizes the immersion as a key aspect to get fun from a D&D experience, and this is the reason because there are many pages describing an immersion system, which in fact is very quick to apply while playing. Scutt's also gives precise notes on how to read the D&D adventures, revealing that the WotC books are designed in a way quite suitable for solo gaming. An easy but effective AI system to rule the monsters is given as well. This method allows to play adventures by your own, for enjoying them as a player before to GM them, or just by the pleasure to play D&D without depending on others' agenda. As the work is solid, all the key elements are adressed, and the method is consistent, I consider this book is a must if you want to play solo D&D adventures, or play with one PC and a GM. It's important to note that the aspects of the method are accurately described, reducing chances to leave questions unanswered. I would like to congrat Tom Scutt for DM Yourself, an recomend you the book. I am eager to purchase the second book soon.

This is the book ive been looking for to play Solo D&D. While i like Mythic GME it does require a massive amount of work to pull off. this is a really helpful guide as a new way to play solo with a module. i really like the immersion idea...i think that is the rosetta stone for solo d&d because it gives you a moment to imagine the scene with one of your 5 senses rather than chuck tons of dice. Great job Tom! this has gotten me back to play solo D&D!

This is THE best Solo RPG tool I have read. (And I have read them all) I have tried most solo systems to play freeform but always feel I would like to play actual written modules as I always find freeform so much work and fall into the same boring routines. This system gives you robust rules to play published adventure modules with a single PC and a sidekick. The enemy AI section is great in this book and especially good is the idea of default behaviours for your PC. The rules about changing the adventure difficulty seem great and the Immersion role to set the scene is very clever. There are also rules for chases, and selling gear. I am going to make my next combat the finale of my current game so I can use DM Yourself properly. If you are into Solo playing this is a must buy. I can't find a single fault in this product.
