Citybook V: Sideshow
by Steve [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/26/2023 16:33:07

The Panther Club and The Pack alone make this book well worth buying. It introduces a multitude of new races that have interesting back stories that can easily be fitted in to a campaign. I have used these with T&T so far, and my Ruffiri singer at the Diamond Spider was great fun to play.

Citybook I: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker
by Steve [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/26/2023 15:48:07

This is by far the best book in the Citybook series, which is saying a lot, as all the books have a lot of inspirational content. I have used this as the basis for my ‘home’ city where all the PC live, shop and start their adventures. The Diamond Spider tavern, the Grey Minstrel Inn, Skywhite’s and the Salmagundi cart have all been well received by the players.

Tunnels & Trolls 1st Edition reprint
by Scott h. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/11/2023 18:22:21

Wow, glad I found this, I started play T and T back in the 70's (yes I'm that old) gave my first addition to a friend and never saw it again. While I don't really RPG anymore it's great to have a copy of the game that I first cut my teeth on, for sentimental reasons if nothing else. Great game, easy to play, can be as simple or as complex as you want, but above all fun. My 5th. addition also went to a friend I had a bad habit back in the day.

There are two pages missing. (P. 73 and 74) That is the description of the Nautilus. Without it, the map of the Nautilus (p. 75) cannot be decoded. Please add these pages to make the book complete.

Tunnels & Trolls Rules 5th Editon
by Piotr K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/16/2023 08:45:51

It is elegant, well thought-out and fun... for "low-level" play, at least. The characters can quickly become almost demigods, stronger monsters require you to roll tens of dice (and then sum them all up). The section about monsters overall is pretty lacking, in my honest opinion. It tells you how the monsters work but the "bestiary" is only a few monsters, which completely does not give me the vaguest idea of what is going to be too easy, what is going to be overpowered.

That said, the way of describing monsters (their strength, HP and EXP is just one number) is genious. The three classes are well thought-out, the kindreds all follow the same multiplier mechanic, which makes creating a character a walk in the park. It only uses d6s.

Alice in Weirdworld T&T solo w/mini rules
by Jon M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/04/2023 08:27:45

I used to play Tunnels and Trolls many years ago and picked this up on a whim. I have now played it a couple of times and love it. The Quick Play rules, provided with the adventure are perfect for me and an ideal introduction to the more advanced sets. I found the adventure to be well balanced. I did not make it to the end alive in my first play through, but i got far enough to leave me wanting a taste for more....there is so much of this weird world left to explore, and so it seems there is a lot of playability. The cover art by Steve Crompton, is amazing. I highly recommend this game and would love to see a supplement and most importantly, a print on demand option please!!! I would love to own and just look at this piece of work as a real book!

Labyrinth T&T solo
by Wj M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/18/2023 05:12:39

An intriguing game setting, in need of updating.

This is one of the earliest published solo adventures for Tunnels & Trolls. Unlike some of the early solos it doesn't seem to have been updated since 1980, and it does show its age.

The basic idea is a bold one - to create an adventure based on the Greek myths - and familiarity with the source material will help your characters make the right choices. (But isn't essential to enjoy the solo.)

The main problems with game play are around the mechanics, which are, in all honesty, a pretty accurate reflection of the way I would have played T&T back in the 1970s. Long stretches of empty passages described in rather colourless text with few surprises. I must confess I was entertained by the intellectual challenge of mapping the labyrinth accurately, but it wasn't wildly exciting. There was no real attempt to mislead the player-character and it was possible to explore most of the labyrinth without any fighting or problem solving.

Encounters with non-player characters are relatively short, standalone and mostly follow a set pattern; meet the character, choose from two or three options (which may or may not lead to a fight), claim reward or pay penalty and move on. (In fairness to the solo, some of these encounters include a fair bit of mythological background and in one or two cases previous encounters may influence what happens to your character.) Some of the rewards are startlingly generous (in Deluxe T&T terms, they would cause a character to advance several levels). These are balanced by some "instant death" paragraphs. Again this is the way we played in the 1970s.

Overall I found this an entertaining solo but I'm conscious there may be an element of nostalgia in my reaction to it. I really like the core idea but the solo needs some updating to make the floor plan more, well, labyrinthine; updates to the encounters to make them fully compatible with later versions of T&T; and some additions to give the whole adventure more of a sense of coherence (whilst sticking to the central premise). It would be interesting to see similar style adventures covering the mythology of different cultures. Such an approach might even have some educational value.

T&T Solo Design Guidelines: HOW TO WRITE A SOLO
by Chris C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/24/2023 17:07:05

Very interesting with both historical interest if you happen to like T&T, and some useful guidelines on constructing your own solo adventures. (Interesting to find out Michael Stackpole wrote Red Circle in a week). Writing this review mostly to note: The 'license agreement' included here to publish your own T&T adventure is of no use. Unlike many of the 3rd party agreements common in the industry nowadays, Flying Buffalo specifically has to agree/sign off on this before it is valid rather than terms being stated up front, and with Flying Buffalo now under new management there's no guarantee the agreement would be taken up at their end.

Mythic Ireland - T&T Campaign
by D. M. M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/26/2021 13:40:11

Last night I finished reading Mythic Ireland by John Briquelet. It is a fantastic collection of material on the ancient Irish that can be used in any campaign. It is written with statistics for Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls. However, since most of it is text and not stat-blocks, it is easily converted to any gaming system.

It includes a thorough section on how to play ancient Irish professions (such as the druids, fili/ bards, witches, warriors, etc.), material on the Irish code of honor and how to use it in a RPG campaign, new magic (such as the Cloak of the Dagda, and the Riastradh, which allows a caster to expefrience Cú Chulainn's Hulk-like "warp spasm", etc.), an overview of Irish king and clan society, an list of commonly used items for purchase (ranging from the traditional backpack to a Bodhran/ drum and gold torc), the role of geasa/ taboos, Irish gods/ religion/ feasts, new creatures in Mythic Ireland (e.g. the fae of the Courts of Light/ Darkness, Cu Sidhe/ otherworld hounds, etc.), maps and descriptions of ancient Ireland, material for a Gamemaster-led adventure for 4-6 player characters (Finneach’s Black Bull), and more. And I haven't even mentioned the beautiful color artwork, not least of which is the cover.

In the spirit of constructive feedback, the book could be made even better if it were slightly reorganized; some of the sections seem spread throughout the book (e.g. "background" material could be clustered in one section and "gameplay" material in another, or at least highlight these as different in the book). Also, it would have been great to have a PDF version that did not have the page coloring as this requires a lot of printer ink. And finally, when will a hardcopy/ softcopy be available?!? :) I'd love to have this on my shelf. These are minor comments and do affect my 5/5 rating.

It is a fantastic collection of material that will provide countless hours of unique RPG gameplay. Well worth the price and your time. 5/5

Beginners Bundle for T&T
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/19/2021 12:01:52

Review of Journey to Buffalo Island. (Mild spoilers.)

Classic escape the island scenario. Makes the most of its small number of paragraphs: a number of variations possible, definite replay value. A choice of possible escape routes; some exploration is required to gather items needed to use them. Sometimes tongue in cheek; enjoyable. Links work. Recommended.

Tunnels & Trolls 1st Edition reprint
by William H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/09/2021 03:05:16

This is a faithful reprint of the original edition of T&T, the one that broke out in 1975.

To be blunt, I prefer 5th and 5.5 to this edition. I got it to see how different it was from 5th, and it's not terribly so, but it's also got some very singificant differences. Rogues are slightly different. All saves are on Luck. The weapon list is shorter, and the weapon dice are slightly lower.

There's a good reason the game has lasted, and while this has most of that, it's not the 5th ed I love.
