The Traveller Bibliography
by Gary [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/21/2023 15:09:15

Very good resource, marred by the lack of bookmarks. The PDF also locks editing behind a password, so you can't create your own. This is a perfect example of a publisher making thigs difficult for a legitimate purchaser, while not even slowing down an actual pirate (I could trivially just print this to PDF and get an editable PDF out of it.)

An attempt to make battleship combat in Traveller playable, but still massively complex. Not all Traveller capital ships are covered and no Swordies or Vargr.

I purchased as I already own PP Escort, which is playable (for up to 5 kton ships)and you can convert ships to it quite easily.

101 Religions
by Jeffrey Z. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/10/2021 15:56:08

Disclosure: The reviewer is a contributor to this product. This review originally appeared in the September/October issue of Freelance Traveller.

Although this supplement dates back to at least the MegaTraveller days, it still has utility today. Virtually its entire content was incorporated unchanged into Supplement 15: Powers and Principalities for Mongoose Traveller 1st Edition, so if you have that volume, purchase of this one is superfluous.

The booklet starts with a one-page introduction that briefly describes the role of religion in human affairs, the Imperial attitude toward religion, and the structure of the booklet. Of particular note is that development of the religions listed in the book was based on the Universal Religious Profile that appeared in the World Builder’s Handbook from Digest Group Publications; the actual profiles and explanation of the profiles are not included due to license restrictions. While it is not essential, obtaining a copy of World Builder’s Handbook is certainly recommended.

The rest of the book is a listing of religions, each with a thumbnail description of beliefs and practices, plus some additional notes of interest to referees, and a small number of adventure hooks involving the religion or its practitioners. The religions are grouped by a basic ‘Scout Service categorization’ which amounts to the type of deitic principal the religion admits. There are several thinly-disguised versions of presently-known real-world religions, several that I recognize from other non-Traveller works of fiction, though with the “serial numbers” more-or-less obscured or obliterated, and others that are undoubtedly made up from whole cloth. While a few seem rather improbable, I do not perceive any of them as going quite to the extreme of the “California Cult of the Week” (or parodies thereof). The vast majority are human-centric, but there are a small number designed specifically with non-humans in mind, and many of the human religions can easily be adapted for the use of non-humans.

There are a few minor formatting infelicities, where a header has become detached by a page or column break from the following body text. Outside of that, the book is quite readable. North American readers who might want to print this should note that this is formatted to ISO A5 paper, which will not fit 2-up on US Letter paper in landscape orientation.

Ultimately, this volume would have been more useful if the editors had been able to include the rules and explanations for the Universal Religious Profile; it is due to this lack – for understandable and legitimate reasons – that I recommend locating a copy of World Builder’s Handbook as a companion (although it is worth owning in its own right).

Power Projection Fleet
by Victor D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/18/2019 15:08:52

Ok, where to begin? Firstly, I'm a long time Traveller fan having played since the days of Classic and Mega Traveller. Starship combat in the Traveller setting has always beena a bit problematic due to the sheer size, massive weapons loadouts and toughness of the ships, especially the battlewagons, yet the settings use of gargantuan spinal mount weapons (that can kill the biggest ships in a single shot) also reduces space combat to a crapshoot - if I fire first and hit, game over. So I was hopeful that FP:F would resolve some of these issues.

It doesn't. Despite being based upon Full Thrust, the rules deviate significantly from that ruleset, losing most of the essential simplicity that those rules come with in the process. The ships are still massive, with vast arrays of guns (taking forever to resolve the use of), and more than a few are armed with 1 shot killer spinal mount weapons. Yep - it's Traveller alright.

My copy also shows evidence of issues of the cross-over between differing computer types - my copy has numerous tiny square boxes scattered randomly across almost all the ships SSd's which interfere with their appearence and add needless clutter. The counter sheets are not exhaustive (and you'll need lots of copies of some sheets to get the required numbers of missile and sand cloud counters), the variety of sample ships provided is limited. Convcersion rules to convert ships from GURPS:T, T20, CT & MT can be used to provide a greater variety of ships, but these only serve to high light just how different the various rulesets have been - players would be well advised to use ALL CT rules ship designs due to their vastly superior manoeuver drive capabilities!

If my copy hadn't been marred by the random box squiggles on the all important SSd's I'dve rated these rules as a 3 or 4 max.

The Traveller Bibliography
by Richard T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/29/2017 13:41:58

I don't know where to start. It's so big and full of...

337 pages of Traveller Bibliography...it's a reference document for all Things Traveller.

Luckily the author, long time Traveller Chief Librarian Timothy Collinson, has done a chapter which is helpfully entitled Where to Begin...

Author of previous reference pieces and long contributor to Freelance Traveller, it is clear Timothy had made this a personal mission. I'll confess I am not a big Traveller collector but reading through the entries I find myself seeking out new frontiers. boldly going where...sorry...basically all I can say is my interest in piqued on supplements I never thought of buying. This is down to the addtional commentary from the author, which brings this book above the level of a simple reference tome.

I won't be printing it out anytime soon as at 337 pages, my poor HP Deskjet might space itself, but as a PDF guide to all the core rules and supplements ever produced it's invaluable.

Having checked a few entries I can say it seems very concise, it clearly covers the primary authors of every book and pdf I think I have seen for sale. I'll update this review in three months once I have a better handle on the content.

I think for $15 (£11.14 GBP) it's a well worth purchase for most Traveller collectors and fans. Time will tell but I wholeheartedly recommend this just for the value of having everything in one place. You'll find me on eBay seeking out even more DGP supplements I never knew existed. That'll be another kidney gone then...

I am doing this review principally to warn potential buyers - if you already own Traveller Supplement 13 - Starport Encounters, do NOT spend your money on this product. This material is lifted (verbatim, from what I could tell) directly from that Supplement. The material is good, but it is NOT new.

Hi Mark. Thanks for highlighting this - I am adding text to each of our 101's to let potential buyers know that Mongoose asked to reprint some of our 101 products in their Supplements. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused - I should have asked Mongoose to clarify the origin of the content.

101 Patrons
by Doug S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/12/2015 17:16:49

While I have some experience GMing other RPGs, I certainly look forward to reading quality plot points, scenarios, and Npcs with which my players can interact. 101 Patrons provides this beyond my expectations. Especially helpful is the cross references given among the various Traveller formats, making this a tool for users of any and all Traveller versions. Not only is the reader introduced to many patron ideas, but each entry comes with multiple scenarios. These make 101 more like 1001!

At Close Quarters
by abraham e. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/22/2014 23:19:58

Basically, At Close Quarters (ACQ) delivers alot less than it promises. While the rules are intended to streamline the combat system in Traveller and make the effort more "realistic," it seems to me that the original system (which I have never played, but which I have read carefully) is easy enough to work with and needs no streamlining.

In terms of accuracy, I am willing to allow that I may have missed something, but ACQ didn't do anything for me. What Traveller (and most of the other reconstituted and updated GDW titles as well) needs is a clearer explanation of when, where, and how combat would be conducted in the future. Once the basic premises are filled in -- as they would be in any military RPG (such as T2K), almost everything else falls into place.

I have seen worse and I'm not sorry to have purchased the product. It just didn't provide what I was looking for.

I\'m sorry ACQ didn\'t provide as much value as you might have hoped for. Please remember that it was produced for \"T4\" or \"Marc Miller\'s Traveller\" which - at the time - we at BITS felt could benefit from some clarification and integration of combat concepts from previous Traveller combat systems and games. ACQ was also intended to support standalone miniatures skirmishes (e.g. using Traveller deckplans) and have proved very popular for demonstration games that we have run at many UK conventions over the years.

I originally rated this lower because it is the only item that would not print out of 240 items that I have downloaded from this site. If you have problems it will print if you go to into advanced printing options and check print as an image. The material is good stuff that will help a referee fill in the holes and flesh out any traveler game. If I didn't have to change settings to print this I would give it a 5.

Hi Robert. Apologies, I'm unsure why this wouldn't print; the publisher settings say it should be printable.
