5 ROOM DUNGEON:#01 THE WIZARD’S PORTAL
Publisher: John R Davis

A great example of the 5 room dungeon, a format that appears to be the new hotness in D&D circles. I particularly like the formatting of the rooms that give you enough detail to describe the rooms well, without resorting to a bland box text that the DM would read out.

This would be great to throw ito an on running campaign in place of a random encounter and there's potential for expanding with your own ideas inot the launch of it's own adventure arc.

A great little dungeon delve for starting characters. For $1 it's well worth a punt.

Artesia Afield: The Book of Dooms Volume 2
Publisher: Aegis & Gorgon
by Jez G. [Verified Purchaser]

Artesia Afield continues in much the same way as the previous book. If you liked the first collection, then everything you liked is in this one too! As Artesia strugles to come to grips with the effects of her actions in volume 1, she finds herself at the head of a growing army as it marches to war. The scale of battles increases in this volume and the amount of different states and gods mentioned rises as well. Like the first volume, I found this one hard going at first. It really does help if you read the extra info at the back of the book. The only problem I have with this series is that there's so many characters I find it confusing sometimes as to who's who. There's a couple of deaths that I think are supposed to be quite significant but I wasn't really sure as I didn't know if they were bit players or some of Artesia's best friends! But that's easily overlooked when you take into account the georgeous artwork and ongoing story.

Spirit of the Century

Spirit of the Century is the best RPG I have ever read! Rules that for once are actualy interesting and, shock, fun to read. A hefty tome, weighing in at over 400 pages, SotC is a delight from cover to cover. Excellent mechanics, the best character generation system EVER, brilliant examples of play and a "how to GM" section that is worth reading even for experienced GM's. A couple of minor niggles, the default setting is a bit uninteresting and I thought the artwork, although evocative of the pulp genre, is a bit poor. However when you weigh this up against the elegance of the system it's a pretty minor couple of points.

Artesia: The Book of Dooms Volume 1

I became intrigued by this product after hearing good things about the RPG. I thpught I would have a look at the comic the rpg is based on and see what the fuss is about. I am glad that I did. On first reading Artesia is a bit dull. There's lots of talk about gods and waring states and prayers and all sorts of nonesense you get in most dire fantasy offerings, I struggled through because the artwork is truly amazing. Then I got to the appendix at the back. Like Tolkein, the author of Artesia obviously has an overarching backstory for the world he has created. There is oodles of info on the gods of the world and the kingdoms therein. Once I had read and digested this I went back and re-read the comic. his time around I realised just how far above the standard hack and slash tale this is. Artesia is an awesome book and I am now fully hooked on it's tale. I would highly recommend this to any discerning graphic novel reader. It isn't for kids though with some quite graphic violence and scenes of full frontal nudity.

the farm
Publisher: Memento Mori Theatricks
by Jez G. [Verified Purchaser]

I'll start off on a positive, I think this is a really cool idea, as soon as I heard about it I started thinking about how I could run it. This however is the only good point. The rules are awful and very badly explained with hardly any examples. There is little to no background and what there is is very vague, for example there are rules for electing leaders within the PC's but there is no explanation of how the leadership is enforced by the owners of "The Farm".

If you've read the blurb about this game then you've already got everything of value from it, if you like the basic idea you'll be better off developing it yourself for whatever system you prefer.

I know it's only $3 but all you're getting for this is a half assed set of rules and a basic pitch for an adventure.

The Quester's Guide to Duck
Publisher: Sceaptune Games
by Jez G. [Verified Purchaser]

Previous to reading this guide I wasn't a fan of Duck in Runequest. They always seemed too comedic for the gritty style I liked. After reading this excellent sourcebook my opinion has changed. No longer are Duck relegated to the comedy sidekick or fall guy, they are now a fully realised race and a viable option as player characters. The excellent writing style really helps bring the Duck to life and is an invaluable aid for any GM or PC who wishes to portray Duck characters in a believable manner. Although there is some mention of other rules found in different Sceaptune Games books it is certainly not neccessary to own them to gain full enjoyment of this product, indeed, if they are as good as this book though I may well have to get them too! Excellent value for money!
