Mini-Dungeon #097: Trade is our Sword
Publisher: AAW Games
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]

Perfect for any Underdark/Darklands campaign. This is easily dropped into any campaign involving the Underdark and makes for a good one-shot encounter. It's a simple setup with a nifty map filled with a few secrets and surprises. I grabbed this to help me come up with something for one session of my Rise of the Drow campaign and it was very easy to use. I literally bought it two hours before the session, read it over and was running it two hours later. The pdf is comprised of two pages with one containing a map. The only drawback would be that there are no creature stats, just the names. If you're like me, you have all of the bestiaries already, if not, you can just pull up the stats online via the d20PFSRD.

AAW has carved a nice little niche for themselves for gamers that want more Underdark adventure.

Recommended.

Spheres of Might

Game Masters, Beware! Fun system for Players that is ripe for abuse! Spheres of Might just as unbalanced as the Spheres of Power system.

I read the glowing reviews from Endzeitgeist and thought, wow, this will be a neat system for the players. Little did I know that the players would take literally every opportunity to abuse this system that they could. They will take abilities that chop up their action economy and have them acting through and literally on top of every other player’s turn in the game.

The system itself is quite creative. It uses a power points system that moves away from what smarky players like to call “Vancian Casting”. If you want to try a power points modular system, this is a good one to go with. The problem is that this system doesn’t take game balance, IE the literal math upon which the entire game is built, into consideration. It throws balance and game economy out the window.

My recommendation to GM/DMs is to only allow this if you trust your players 100%. It is too easy to abuse, and I’ve had to learn over the course of three campaigns spread through five years that Spheres of Power/Might players will do everything they can to destroy the game balance and make the entire game about them and their single PC.

As for design, I can only give this system three stars. The way the creators take action economy and literally IGNORE it is a pain in the derriere. Taking the notion of acting on top of other players' turns is just a horrible idea. Once may be acceptable, but over and over is not. It's a game designed for a group of people to play and enjoy, not for one player to take control of every other player's turns. It's honestly disgusting.

In summation, an interesting system. Horrible for game balance. Too easy to abuse by power gaming players.

Recommended to avoid at all costs, unless you want your game destroyed. Only let your friends that you absolutely trust play with it. Otherwise, avoid it.

As for design, I can only give this system FOUR stars, because it just takes everything that the game was built upon and ignores it. I deducted another star because when I backed this on Kickstarter, it was sold as the ULTIMATE SPHERES OF POWER.

Ultimate is an adjective meaning “being or happening at the end of a process; final.”

This book is anything but the final collection and honestly, I felt betrayed by the creators. They continued to release supplements during the kickstarter that were not included and then continued to release supplements after the Kickstarter was concluded. I wanted to purchase the system in its final form, not the PENULTIMATE version. Be upfront with your customers next time.

In summation, an interesting system. Horrible for game balance. Too easy to abuse by power gaming players. Deceptive marketing from the designers.

Recommended to avoid at all costs, unless you want your game destroyed. Only let your friends that you absolutely trust play with it. Otherwise, avoid it.

Edit: The Mythic version utilizes LEGENDARY abilities which make the game completely unbalanced. I didn't think there was a way to make Spheres of Power more unbalanced than it was, but the designers figured it out. Kudos to you. Avoid unless you're a masochist.

Breaking Hearts - A Valentine's Day Adventure (Level 3 - 5 PCs)
Publisher: Dan Coleman Productions
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/15/2021 18:18:16

Grabbed this for a short fun Valentine's Day themed encounter!

This was a well-written and simply presented add-on adventure that can be added to any campaign with very little work. I included this encounter in part of our hex crawl for Rise of the Drow and it blended right in seamlessly.

The stats are included for D&D5E, but the adventure converts easily into the system of your choice with minimal effort. The geomorphic nature of the map can take a second to get used to, but once you decide that fun is the order of the day, you won't be too worried about the silhouettes and spoilers that seem to be included on the map.

The story of the Succubus looking to complete her ritual was easy enough that all I had to do was figure out who went missing from the group that our PCs would actually go out to save. The connections are loose enough, that it is very easy to blend into whatever is going on in your campaign. The cavern itself only took a few hours to run through, so it works quite well for a one-shot one-night only adventure.

I converted it to Pathfinder First Edition by grabbing the stats for the Succubus out of Bestiary 1, converted the Culpids to Dretch variants, and then grabbed the quipper fish stats from the Tome of Horrors Complete from Frog God Games.

It was fun, the fight with the succubus was challenging, and the party loved the final realization that the entire cave was shaped like a heart.

Light-hearted, easily adaptable, and fun to run. Grab it for your Valentine's Day adventure today!

Rise of the Drow (PF1)
Publisher: AAW Games
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/29/2020 21:22:39

I heard a lot about Rise of the Drow over the years of playing Pathfinder. I missed the initial releases and the subsequent Pathfinder compilation, so I was thrilled to join the Kickstarter for the Rise of the Drow Collector's Edition. I went in whole-hog for the BIG book, pdfs, dice, maps and even the Underworld Encounters Deck! To date, I have been very pleased with the end result, as the maps, dice, and pawn set are really nice and are of top notch quality. The same could be said for the overall adventure, Rise of the Drow. The original adventure was presented at level six, but the story was later expanded to include a level one introduction. It is worth saying that this adventure probably works best for starting at level three, as the introduction can be quite taxing, to even the most veteran of players. This is a good thing, mind you, as this adventure starts in a way that feels unique and gets the players characters involved on the action from the getgo!

The adventure book is almost 600 pages long and covers a complete bestiary of creatures used in the adventure as well as setting and campaign information about Rybalka and the various nearby dwarven and drow cities, respectively. I'm reading through the adventure and it looks to hit all of the buttons of epic fantasy for those that enjoy such things. As an old school player with a lot of experience dealing with the nefarious drow of old, I jumped at the chance to bring a proper drow invasion into the Pathfinder era. Over the course of this campaign, the experience should run the gamut of what makes long running campaigns great!

I noticed a few minor errors here and there, but nothing major. The pdf is bookmarked for easy reference and the entire book has sidebars throughout. There are constant timelines and reminders alongside page numbers for the creatures or items in each encounter. Honestly, the way this is organized makes it superior to formatting used by Paizo, Kobold Press, and Frog God Games.

I'm still waiting for my final BIG book from the Kickstarter, but I feel, based on the sheer depth of material available to mine for this campaign alongside the way my players are reacting to the game, that this will be considered a classic drow saga not only by our little gaming table, but by many more tables to come! Rise of the Drow is as good as fantasy roleplaying adventures get.

Buy it, today!

Sex Cult of Cthulhu (Cardstock Characters™)
Publisher: Skirmisher Publishing
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/19/2018 11:34:52

If you recently picked up the Cthulhu Mythos for Pathfinder book and have started implementing its sinister secrets and cults into your campaign, then there's a good chance that you can yse this set of cardstock characters. Those culty people love having dark ceremonies filled with sex and sacrifice and unless you're holding on to a rusty set of Ral Partha miniatures from 1981, you'll have a hard time finding the appropriate figures to put on the board.

Just print these pages out and follow the directions to assemble them. You'll have your evil cult up and dirty dancing in no time!

They could use a couple male figures as well, just to balance it out, but I'm not complaining. That might make for a good follow up set.

Pirate Campaign Compendium (Pathfinder)
Publisher: Legendary Games
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/14/2018 14:42:11

I was a backer for the kickstarter for this book and boy am I glad I joined it! Put simply, this book contains everything you need to run pirate or naval based campaigns. You get rules, a pirate codex, bestiaries, both normal and mythic, rules for ship to ship combat, rules for mass naval combat, adventures, spells, magic items and so much more.

There's too much content to cover concisely here. Just read the description above. All of that stuff is indeed trapped between these pages. This book is a compilation of previously published and playtested material combined with all new content. If you're one of those whackadoos that only reads reviews filled with negatives, then dig up the reviews for all of the individual parts and you'll find there are very few complaints.

The hardback is gorgeous and will look great on your shelf or in your hands for years to come. If you are running the classic pirate adventure path from Paizo or just running a pirate campaign at home, then this book is a must-buy!

Silence from Sommerisk - An adventure for characters of all levels
Publisher: Petersen Games
by JEROME M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/06/2018 20:05:08

I picked this up so I could use some ideas to run the Cosmic Horror Campaign from Paizo Publishing. Once I cracked the book, I found a really neat start up adventure to introduce cosmic horror into one's campaign. What sets this apart from most starter adventures is that it is easily adapted to any level of play! There are handy reference tables with each encounter that explain how to scale each individual encounter from level one all the way to level twenty!

I managed to glean enough information to use elements of this adventure in the Cosmic Horror Adventure Path. In reading through the book, it looks like it would make for a good addition to any campaign or work easily as a stand alone adventure, for any level.

It should go without saying that you need a copy of Cthulhu Mythos for Pathfinder in order to run this adventure as all of the creatures are contained in the bestiary in the main sourcebook. The adventure does not provide monster stats.
