Black Star

Black Star obviously inspired by Star Wars. The Star Wars RPG, while having a wealth of books and sources available, when played was less than smooth with my players. But along comes Black Star! This is a minimalistic system, which means combat is fast and less clunky, it's also fun to run. Character creation is a snap, and has enough options to make your character truly shine from others. Black Star is set up to play in other sci fi / fantasy scenarios or more importantly: create your own.

If you want to play some Sci- Fantasy, don't want to spend about a grand on collecting books, get BlackStar!

What can I say but WOW. Excellent addition to Tiny Dungeons. I must say I really dislike the word "Tiny" being on all these products, because although the rules are tiny, the possibilities are endless for creativity, as evidenced by this book. Much larger possibilities than 5E can provide.

The setting is quite original and better than what I've seen in the majority of life playing DnD / Pathfinder. A world with static light/dark zones and the effects it would have on their society. It's original and inspiring.

New Heritages: Have you ever wanted to play a ghost? Now you can! The new heritages are a great addition to any TDungon campaign. You get seven new interesting heritages. My favorite is Shadow Fey, bio-luminessent elves. The best thing about some of these heritages is that have specific traits that only they can take.

There is a small beastiary in the back of the book. I like the "Silencers" and I'm already plotting an adventure based around this one baddie. Some very cool original beasts back there.

New Traits: These are crazy good. They introduce something called "carvers" which is awesome. (Think benders from Avatar.. the anime.. not the blue CGI fest) But they go beyond the elements. Imagine having a time bender, I mean carver or a gravity carver! If you are looking for a bit more concrete rules on them though, it's not there (Like other prestige archmage traits from TD2E). That can be good an bad, good = it gives a player a lot of flexibility to come up with creative uses. Bad = some players look for more concrete rules and are not as creative.

The art is overall awesome. (I like this guy's style and he's in a lot of TD6 books.) IF you are on the fence about this, don't be, get off fence and add to cart. You won't be sorry. I hope the author comes out with more for this!

Tiny Dungeon: Second Edition

My shelves are filled to the brim with RPGs from every corner of the planet. Our main go to's are DnD 5E, Cortex Prime, Prowlers and Paragons. I am a big fan of cinematic systems (Cortex being the top of that category with PbtA coming in second.) Someone recommended TD6, got Tiny Dugneon 2E and fell in love with it. It is not perfect, but it's easy to kit bash and there's plenty of source materials to use for it that you can make it perfect for you. My players are bigger on the role play than the tactical and crunch of combat. Usually an encounter will go like: "You run into three Orcs, they are all brandishing weapons". Player = "I ask them how their family is." Typically combat slows them down on their enjoyment factor. Tiny Dungeon takes the ton of crunch and throws it in the bin, focuses on character creation and the enjoyment of story telling. It's also very enjoyable for a DM. Character Creation: It's a breeze, your players can make the character they want to play in minutes. Kudos for figuring this out. Removing stats and replacing them with traits is genius, you still feel like a hero and you can impact the world even without a STR of 22.
Combat System: Expect your combat to go much faster, it is streamlined to almost near perfection.
Art: The art is really good. I only wish there was a full color version.
Setting: The majority of the book is filled with settings, take you want, leave what you don't like.

Where it falls short: Magic and spells. Wish there was an example spell list for the spell touched and the Spell readers. But it's easy enough to create a spell that turns a door into smoke or what ever you can think of.

If you are on the fence, get off it and just buy it. A huge regret is I didn't get the hardcover version, the soft cover's pages aren't the greatest quality, but the content within makes up for that.

Prowlers & Paragons Ultimate Edition

This has quickly become my favorite modern super hero RPG. It can handle any supers situation, any power level, has a great mix of (light) crunch and cinematic story telling. It comes up with a lot of great mechanics for handling minions making it quick and easy to run combat with dozens of minions. Another great invention is the "super mook" which is a quick rule to making up a villain on the fly during play. The art is fantastic, the layout is top notch (reminds me of Mutants and Masterminds, but that's a good thing). The list is powers is fantastic, you can build ANY hero you can think of. You can also build in any genre, Saturday morning cartoon heroes.. check, four color comics.. check, gritty realism... check. Combat is not bogged down with hefty math. Character creation is also quite easy with a simple point buy system. This game although deep, is very accesible to new players. My only wish is that they would come out with custom dice.
