Layer of Eggs

Aboslutley worth the price. Layer of Eggs is an hilariously gross Shadow of th Demonlord suppliment. The art if evocative and I really like the opening bit on what led to the creation of the monster.
The backstory for the creature is fun and an absolute inspiration for a novice or starting adventure. I really hope to see these sorts of products in teh futre. I would have loved for there to be a more fleshed out adventure along with single monster products like this. A short mine adventure like the dragons' lair in "Killing the Dragon" would have been great and I would pay more for a suppliment like that.

And the Stars Never Rise: A Something Strange Genesys Adventure

I was part of the playtest group for this and received a free copy once the product was released

My group enjoyed this short scenario. My group of experiended players really enjoyed the single session play through. I have not run this for all new players yet, but it does look like it would bea great short introduction to Genesys as a system.
For a short adventure, there was a lot to do, but it was not overwhelming to prepare. Each scene is well summarized and enough information is provided to move the story along if the players do something unexpected. The combat encounters are well balanced but do require some planning on the players part. There are a couple spots that could be overhwelming if the players approach the game like a typical dungeon crawl and just kick open every door. The layout and are is excellent. I really apprecaite that the stat blocks and rules from the Something Strange setting were included in this scenario and the research rules addendum is an excellent add-on to the system.

I've been using a spreadsheet for somethign similiar and having the professional looking product to replace it is helpful. The content is great and the new additions to the rules seem well balanced. I'm looking forward to trying them out soon.

Brain Drain: Android Genesys Adventure
Publisher: EDGE Studio

8-12-2019 - Updated review to reflect changed in 1.1 version of product and having run the adventure -Disclosure- I received a review copy for an upcoming YouTube review series and podcast I am currently developing

I haven't played this adventure and I will update this review if anything changes in play. My star ratings are 100% based on game play, but I will comment on layout and design as well.

I did buy the Shadows of the Beanstalk rulebook, but I am not generally a fan of roleplaying in the cyberpunk/dystopian future genre. I haven't read much of the fiction that is the basis of the genre so I'm coming into this setting without many preconceived notions on how it "should be".

Brain Drain is a short, to the point heist adventure that does a very good job of showcasing the rules that are unique to the Shadow of the Beanstalk campaign setting. The adventure starts with 6 pages of necessary background and then starting right up with the call to action. The description of the hook and the first scene give the GM a lot of room to play bringing the scenes to life.

There are two unique aspects of the scenario that really elevate the product. There is a player facing "clock" that I think is inspired by other RPG systems. I enjoy seeing how others incorporate these tools into other games and it is very smooth here. I would like to have seen a physical handout for this mechanism. Without spoiling anything there is an antagonist group that is statted and described in a way to makes them a challenge to different playstyles and party compositions. I wish more adventures would follow this path rather than stat and advise based on what the designers this is the one likely path.

The layout and design are top-notch, this looks as good as the adventure published by Fantasy Flight Games.

I ran this for a group of friends online and it was a lot of fun. I would describe it as an enclosed sandbox. The players had a lot of freedom to approcach the challenges before them without there being one best option. If you are using the full Network Encounter rules from the Android Setting, having a "Runner" will maximize the fun. It was a great introduction to Android Campaign Setting and does a great job of providing an introduction to what is different/new in Android for experienced Genesys players. The themes that I associate with the genre are all here and the premise is enough to carry this on to a full campaign with this adventure.

Ready....Fight! An Unarmed Combat Supplement for Genesys
Publisher: EDGE Studio
by James D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/03/2019 14:16:01

This was my first Genesys Foundry purchase. I have purchased Community Created Content from other marketplaces before and I have what I think are high standards for fan content that I am paying money for.

  1. Rules Content – The rules content in Ready…Fight! Is outstanding. Adding fighting moves and techniques as weapons that are purchased with XP rather than setting currency opens up an entire new subsystem that this game definitely had room for. I expect this will be a part of the official system in no time. I see a lot of game styles where this can create a much narrower focus of play. Logistically, I think this will help keep games running longer as it gives players something else to spend XP on rather than the race to 5 ranks in the primary skill and associated talents.
  2. New Skills and Talents – The skill changes are in line with what one would expect from a setting like this. The new talents are incredibly evocative and it’s very easy to get a mental picture of the use of the talent in the narrative setting.
  3. The Art – 85% of the art in this book is a great fit for the Genesys style. The only negative mark I will give the book is the use of photographs rather than the art to match the style of the rest of the book. This isn’t something I would give a lower rating for, just an observation.
  4. I’m still working my way through the settings, but they seem very well researched and thought-out.
  5. This book does seem more suited for players experienced with the Narrative Dice System, Genesys, Star Wars, etc. I would hesitate to recommend this to someone as their introduction to the system. It adds a higher degree of crunch to a mid-crunch system. I would suggest having a campaign to two under your belt before implementing most of the material in this book.
I think this book will be the standard by which I judge all other Foundry projects. The price per page was fair and it was nearly all original content and original art. It is written by an experienced game designer, so the writing is very clean and flows very well. I will be bringing this to the table to play in the next couple of weeks and I will update my review to reflect the at the table experience if needed.

DDAL-ELW01 Murder in Skyway
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

Having both played and DM'ed this adventure, it’s a solid introduction to Eberron and an entertain low level adventure for new as well as experienced players.

The module formatting was excellent, i really like the lack of read aloud text and think it makes for a more genuine table experience. From a player’s perspective, I did dislike the final encounter. I think there were too many assumptions on party composition and that the creature punches way above its CR. I do not want to spoil anything so I will not get into specifics.

When I ran the adventure, I had a very small group, so I used the suggested adjustment for very weak parties and the above issue was not a concern.

I think the extra objectives could be a little more integrated into the story as a whole, but with a little gentle nudging, I was able to direct my players to accomplish all of the goals.
