Spheres of Origin
Publisher: Drop Dead Studios
by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]

Where to start...thankfully, the section about DMs not allowing players to use this supplement as being discriminitory against their origins was removed.

However, despite working with a consulting firm meant to avoid such issues, you can deliberately cripple yourself physically for superpowers. This is in addition to the new base class that attempts to mimic racial paragons of editions past, about becoming more powerful via accumulating physical traits normally associated with race, despite the book treating that word like taboo.

Furthermore, as is common with Matt Daley products, power creep is rampant. As a tool for DMs? It wasn't even initially intended as one and it somehow does a poorer job of the default Paizo race build even with its plentiful number of issues.

I would not reccomend this book for DMs or players looking to make new races or to respectfully handle disabillity in their games and it hurts to say that I've come to expect works like this from Dead Drop Studios when the author of this book and others I've reviewed is at the helm.

Spheres Bestiary: Aberrations
Publisher: Drop Dead Studios
by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/24/2021 12:39:40

Not only does this book feature horrifically overpowered general content, basic no-prerequisites feats that power creep the signature ability of a sphere's specific +5 or more CR template, it also tries to imply the very thoughtful and helpful guidelines for determining Magic Skill Bonus/Defense in order to prevent certain types of monster hitdie from being entirely uninteractble should not be used for no tangible reason.

The drow noble+++ the book offers sets poor precedent instead of just using racial hitdie to demonstrate a superior creautre on the species level.

Lastly, the pre-written monsters and templates are horrifically broken and would be nearly unusable as a DM due to how little a player can do to fight fairly, seemingly only here to give bad DMs plausible deniability for poor encounter design.

Amalgamate creature powercreeps the Mythic Agile template and then some. Antimemtic creature is just a spiteful jab at the only way players are supposed to learn how to use their abilities correctly.

The presented monsters are built so optimally using character levels and, to borrow an analogy from competitive card games, netdecked meta strategies, it would seem the horrically powerful and game-balance-busting options written by the author in books prior are encouraged if not required to beat these creatures. Which is sadly a trend for the Bestiaries penned by Matt Daley and published throgh Dead Drop Studios.

I was hoping for another book with the Quality of Beast Tamer's or Undead and Immortal Forlorn, but it seems I was mistaken.

A simple, flavor and effective archtype for Barbarian. A desperately deserved addition after Bloodrager stole barbarian's lunch all those years ago.

Highly reccomend for lovers of all things dwarven, angry and drunk.

Diamond Races: Race Equity Variant Rules

An absolutely fabulous quick-fix and insight into making more races a valid and valuable choice for Pathfinder 1st Edition. By leveling the playing field on what is a very proveable level, this allows DMs to focus more on what defines a species in their worldbuilding on a more flavorful level while maintaining parity amongst player options.

Absolutely reccomenmd for any DM, and even players, looking to make more meaningful choices at one of the earliest steps of character building.

Demons of the Abyss: Rank and File
Publisher: Drop Dead Studios
by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/24/2021 12:48:18

Unlike Fiends of the Cosmos, I feel like Demons of the Abyss: Rank and File actually achieves the goals of what a Spheres-using Bestiary should look like. This gives DMs the tools they need to run their favorite monsters from the Abyss in a Spheres game without introducing headache or argument causers like bringing back the Sacred Cow that is Wish.

I eagerly look forward to more bestiaries in this format, and the latter half of this bestiary which I picked up today.

I hope this becomes the quality I can look forward to from DDS bestiaries, as I felt fiends from the cosmos was a harsh decline from Magical Beasts and Climactic Encounters and Undead and the Immortal Forlorn.

Spheres Bestiary: Fiends of the Cosmos

by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/24/2021 23:14:12

A fun bestiary that expands on introducing spheres to NPCs to make both subsystems mesh together However, I feel this particular dropped the ball on including cookie-cutter meta PC options at every turn, rather than leveraging the unique strengths of evil outsiders of different varieties.

Most notable of all is the very first entry, a creature that can on a low-estimate swing for 12d6+324 twice a turn. I am not exagerating or expecting a critical hit. It simply attacks that hard due to exploiting infamous synergies from some of Paizo's most ill-regarded content.

On the other hand, the elemental chaos orb is an intrigueing and exciting enemy to face.

The Diabolist's Handbook
Publisher: Drop Dead Studios
by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/24/2021 23:01:34

The Diabolist's Handbook contains a the typically expected gamut of fun new options, and has improved in terms of content that raises balance concerns since the last Matt Daley release. Feedback was still ignored regarding more egregious balance issues with new content and upgrades to old content. While I am excited to add this book to my collection, I advise DMs to carefully approve which options players take and the worldbuilding impact of NPCs with the options presented.

Still a great addition for any spheres-of enjoyers.

While the Alienist's Handbook contains a wide variety of fun and new content, it follows the same issues as typical handbooks penned by Matt Daley. Feedback was ignored regarding more egregious balance issues with new content and upgrades to old content. While I am excited to add this book to my collection, it does falter on how much content I have to very carefully approve compared to normal.

An excellent NPC codex giving wonderful DM tools from a wide and varied range of creatures of all CRs, going from low hitdie cultists and bandits to epic personas and villains. The variety of themes and organizations provides a stellar jumping off point for any aspiring DM, both for those wanting to use Spheres of Power and Might and for looking at how to structure factions for their own worldbuilding.

A must have.

An absolute blast to read through and an absolute smorgasbord of varied content to use. A wonderful addition for any fans of teleporting, realm-traveling, space-themed abilities and fun new content.

My players were clamoring for this to get released from playtest for a while and it delivered beyond satisfactorily when it released. Would reccomend picking it up for any fan of the Spheres subsystem.

An excellent conversion for many classic undead as well as exceedingly helpful rules for converting monsters and creatures with racial HD to the Spheres subsystems. The new-takes on classic templates like lich and the new original monsters included were the cherry on an already exceedingly useful addition to the spheres roster. Pairs excellently with its intended partner book, the Gravecallers handbook.

Lost Might - The Braggart
Publisher: Lost Spheres Publishing
by Antoine M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/07/2020 18:47:31

Since the release of Sage, anything regarding Spheres of Power and Might has been, for the most part, looked at carefully to avoid repeating the mistakes of the class. The Braggart and some of the new talents absolutely represent a leap in power floor that is grossly abhorrent.

From class features alone, the class comes swinging out of the gate with 25 talents over 20 levels alongside a slew of powerful class features. Some of which make a critical mistake of typing another stat, especially Charisma, to AC and saves (before allowing you to share that with your allies) let alone the fact that Flair as a mechanic rewards the already optimal method of stacking to-hit as high as possible. Furthermore, the class fails the infamous bag of helpless rats check regarding flair.

Should you decide you have enough talents for your build, it can easily start converting class features into bonus talents (instead of being locked in like a Conscript) whnever it suites. Combined with the fact it gets a class feature to negate any difficulty in triggering its supposed overwhelming success class features makes the class a remarkly power crept chassis to extant content without the reputation of being mediocre, which the core spheres team addresses regularly due to many overly conservative archtypes in the core release of spheres of might.

The stress archetype is very poorly designed. Making a martial use Burn but named differently so everything that currently exists doesn't help with it is ill-thought out and painfully ignornant of the less poorly balanced version on the Spheres of Power section of content.

The casting archetype shows the author wasn't aware of Ultimate Spheres of Power (frankly, I think they got all their knowledge from the wiki without actually reading the How to X sections) as it assigns a CAM when CAM is part of tradition now.

Next, the absolutely wildly busted ability that is the talent Nolstalgic Callback. Not only does it allow you recoup expensive resources, for example an extended empowered casting of a very powerful Spheres of Power talents from the mind sphere, it also allows extension of normally exceedingly short duration morale bonuses. This functions as both resource duplication and action economy cheating, and it applies to the entire team. It also functions on it self, allowing ad-nauseam extention of buffs that could otherwise be negated, dispelled or counterplayed, and the broken morale based class features of the Braggart itself.

All in all, I can't believe something this ridicously powercrept was released in such a state that means it almost competes with the lofty throne of the Sage class and can not honestly reccomend content from this book in any game attempting to not invalidate years of content production and balance.

One of my favorite additons yet. Spheres has always been a system expertly designed to help make a TTRPG world your very own, but having to create every new statblock using the systems it presents or modifying existing monsters is an arduous task even for industrious DMs. This line of beastiaries for spheres games fixes that problem, giving original monster content and a guidepost to jump off from to designing your own monsters. A perfect buy for GMs and Homebrewers that adore spheres.
