Ravnica Revealed: The Guildmaster's Toolbox
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]

Roll tables, roll tables, and more roll tables...

For those MtG enthusiasts, you would have a better idea if the tables are cannonically accurate than I but there seems to be a good variety of not just random encounter tables but tables like:

  • Specialty Shops
  • Tavern Names
  • Adventure Hooks
  • Cuisine Options

Suggestions - The Table of Contents do not hyperlink to later pages in the PDF which is a quick fix. If you don't want to add more to the Table of Contents to add page references for the various roll tables then I would add an Index at the end to make it easier to use and find what you want or need.

The product is also very table and text heavy. A little more artwork would make it easier to read and navigate without the Index if that is easier. The monster descriptions at the end would be easier to identify if you added a heading for them, otherwise they bleed into the final action for each too often. Overall, a very good product that adds a lot of value to your game.

5e Racial Handbook - Over 40 New Races and Subraces
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 14:01:34

Personally I prefer races over the new 5e aspect of lineages. Race actually has ability scores that reflect their heritage. Moving past my soapbox... Sometimes supplemental material values quantity over quality - this product tip toes that line but there are enough gems in here that it is okay - especially for a Pay What You Want product.

Pros - Having subraces for previously used monstrous races like goblins, hobgoblins and kenku were exciting not just to me as a DM but for my players as well and have been used in multiple campaigns. I still am waiting to have a PC play a lesser illithid... I would be so excited to see that roleplay! Drow are a problem... Mind flayers are a totally different kind of nightmare. I had a PC play a myconid druid in an Out of the Abyss campaign and we had a lot of fun with it.

Cons - No artwork for some of the new races that even though there was flavor text involved, I doubt how I envision the race actually reflects what it looks like to the author. Some races have way more racial traits to them to the point that they feel imbalanced and some tend to move in the opposite direction as well. There are a few of these races that are official races at this pont. This needs an update.

100 Monster Hunts (Fantasy Grounds)
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 13:45:03

If I was running a campaign that was more heavily weighted on monster hunting, this would be perfect. It has provides hooks and flavor texts as well as rewards for hunts. The references for all the monsters was helpful as well as the roll tables based on the party's APL. The only issue reason that this isn't a 5 star review is it doesn't come with any battle maps whatsoever. I am sure the original author only made the PDF for the sake of designing easy modular pre-built "drop-in" encounters however anything sold on a VTT that screams combat, I feel ought to have some sort of map even if they reference the free maps that come from SW.

I have used this in a campaign before with a monk that wanted to cook monster meat. Her mentor would provide her with monster recipes and she could use a local bounty board to acquire the various ingredients. It was her version of fun so the rest of the party was willing to play along thankfully but now that the story of the campaign has come front and center she has put this on the back burner unfortunately but overall it was easy to use and quick to adapt and implement in game (minus again battle maps). Would recommend.

100+ NPC Greetings
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

Date Added: 03/13/2021 13:33:27

Although the Random NPC Greetings are helpful as a table for the DM or GM, I find the accents and unique dialogue suggestions to be extremely helpful. Again for $1, the product is a great value for the price. Overall, this supplement is more flavor than a necessity and I can't remember when I picked it up but I think I got it as part of a bundle or as a gift.

A substantial list or roll table of Dark Gifts that you can bring into your game. Personally I was just going through my old library of PDFs and found this gem and plan to use it to apply curses to various items that my party can receive from a hag. The same could be used for loot or boons from any evil NPC to their followers and minions.

Last Stand: A Worthy Death
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 13:02:14

Conceptually I love this product. Allowing my players to go out in a blaze of glory... It is amazing and very cinematic. Giving the option to instead of having everyone greave or rush in to save a fallen comrade that could potentially result in a TPK, allow the player to shine as their PC one last time is a fun concept on turning death around for a game. If your party wants more roleplay though, this can rob them of feeling the loss if done incorrectly. Plus, providing a player with this crazy adrenaline boost to "go out swinging" needs to have a lot of prep work done with communicating with your player what kind of cues you want to have so it doesn't disrupt the flow of the game and narrative. Basically: this takes a lot of prep work to be done right between you and your player.

Call it a problem of having the wrong party of players but I have yet to find anyone that wants to implement this. Every player I have added to my table would rather try against the odds and roll their death saving throws than roll up a new character after having their chance in the spotlight with an epic farewell. In older editions where player death was more common, this could have been used more often but as it stands with my 5e games, it continues to sit in my PDF library gathering dust.

I feel because of this it is difficult to provide a good review when I have yet to put it into practice in my games but what I can say for the product is it is very well thought out. Beautiful artwork and professional layout. It does have a handful of simple grammatical and spell errors throughout. In the end, it includes roughly 3 options to choose from for almost every class and most of the options look and feel like these were built for PCs that die later on in a campaign during Tier 2+ levels of play. Interesting and fun product for only a few dollars but really need the right group to be able to use it.

Creator Reply:
Thanks for the honest review Jordan! It's definitely not a fit for every campaign, but I hope you end up getting to run Last Stand with a more hardcore module and/or players in the future. I'm also always open to hear about any grammatical errors I missed! Cheers.

(Not So) Legendary Actions
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 12:33:52

With the combination of action economy and initiative in 5e, having monsters as a DM with Legendary Actions almost seems like a must once you hit Tier 2 of play unless of course you have a full squad or waves of minions as well. This free 3-page supplement does a great job of furthering that discussion and providing a handful of potential options as well as an example stat block to include in your next combat. Low CR monsters can still surprise your veteran players when you add this small piece of homebrew. Great job!

Great little free product that should be included in any mapmakers library as a resource for reviewing their own creations. It overviews aspects of geography and occurances in nature that ought to influence our designs but are easily forgotten in the excitement once pen hits paper so to speak. Highly recommended!

Gunslinger Martial Archetype for Fighters
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 12:03:30

Pros - Love the different properties of the various firearms including the variety of "called shots" (Trick Shots) combined with the Grit system as well as the misfire mechanic. I appreciate that the subclass is written suscinctly and as clear as possible (but I did have to reread some mechanics two or three times before they became clear and now I can't figure out how I didn't understand it the first time).

Cons - I appreciate that Matt sees how futuristic guns and gunpowder based weapons are in the typical 5e settings so some firearms need to be crafted and not simply bought (regardless of the rarity of the weapon). However to require a mechanic like crafting and then not actually have a system built with it painfully reminds me how poisons have been handled in 5e. Wish there was more to the crafting aspects! Conceptually great but implementation feels like it is only done half way.

The Hungover Adventure Guide

This is the perfect little module for a one-shot with friends or a downtime adventure that can add lasting consequences to your campaign after a long night of drinking. The drinking mechanics with the various inebriation scores was very well thought out. I personally had my players use this in the middle of their campaign and one of them got a map tattoo to the next location in the adventure which made for a great plot hook. In fact, all 10 pages of possible outcomes of the hangover are great plot hooks that do in fact remind the party of the film, The Hangover, as purposefully designed by the author. The class based RP suggestions were super helpful and visual as well. The variety of drink options again was top notch including having their inebriation scores for each type of alcohol or mixed drink.

Very fun! Will most definitely run again!

The Lingering Soul - Class/Post-Death Option
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/13/2021 11:40:03

I wasn't ever sure that I was going to have any players use this in any of my games or campaigns. Seems like players love homebrew campaigns but not necessarily player options. Personally I love having more options to pick from and one time I was running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, I had the opportunity to playtest it myself. In that adventure, there is an undead NPC that can be friendly to the party in Trollskull Alley. The party liked his roleplay so much that when they eventually decided to go after the gold later in the adventure they decided to bring him along too. The Lingering Soul Class was the perfect option that I had in my arsenal to build out an undead NPC that could accompany the party on their adventure. I would highly recommend this product!

I only playtested the Poltergeist subclass and up to level 5 so I can't speak to the other aspects of the class:

Ghostly Form might as well as be a race built into a class based on all the details incorporated into this one feature but it is designed well. Consume enchantment is an interesting ability built for PCs that really love their magic item build and don't want to give it up even after death. Possession is an wordy ability that works on allies and enemies alike. I can see the argument to be made for it being a Level 1 ability as well as its current place as a Level 2. Tbh, most players who would use this subclass I would highly doubt are Level 1 adventurers so it doesn't matter either way. Pervade the Fallen is similar to Possession but you possess a dead body of a creature. I feel like allowing this to be used any number of times during the adventuring day combined with the taking half damage dealt to the corpse (1 HP) makes this trait less useful and/or viable. I would at least provide the corpse with:

Hit Points = Proficiency Bonus x 1d6 (hit die)

Unseen Passenger is a fantastic upgrade to the Possession trait against enemies. Any time you upgrade an existing trait as you level up adds to the thematic and mechanical aspects of the class. Xenoglossia seems underpowered for a Level 9 ability. It is a good ability but it should happen earlier on but it also should have a certain number of uses per day. This is ability is like having counterspell at will. The counterspell spell typically can be picked up at Level 5 as a Level 3 spell. Piercing Chill ought to be the Level 9 ability but it should happen earlier on but it also should have a certain number of uses per day. Being able to put disadvantage on enemies at will is strong.

The various subclass traits are all very well designed to simulate the various NPC spirits/ghosts that these PCs represent. If you are acting like a traditional ghost Poltergeist is the class for you. If you want to be more attack heavy then go Wraith. If you want to be more support/healer similar to the spell's whose name the subclass comes from, Spirit Guardians should be your choice.

Fantasy Grounds 5E Stats
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Jordan C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/25/2020 18:27:06

So I have watched streams on YouTube of different VTT D&D games and I have always wanted to be able to calculate stats to see how each player shined and have even thrown data into the live chats in some situations saying how many crit fails and crit successes were rolled in a session. When I found this app though, I was really excited to implement it in my own games. I still have to fully explain how to use it with my players but they all love to see the stats. With this newest update where it will show the players that had the highest damage or most kills for the party in a session, this will only make the sessions more exciting for the players as they can track exactly how they did.

As part of a full review, some aspects that I hope that come in the further would be ways to access dead character stats if you happen to have removed or deleted their character sheets in the future. Their stats are still logged in the chat history files in FG but they are no longer associated with an active PC so it would be nice for historical purposes and not to clutter up your PC board to be able to pull their stats that way in the future. There are times when the numbers aren't exactly correct if you ever manually do anything or if a PC decides to test out a new weapon or new damage when they change their character sheet or if for example - when a paladin uses a lay on hands, you manually adjust the PCs HP rather than using a heal effect just because it is quicker. So you do have to be mindful of how the stats are collected in order for it to reflect everything correctly but as a tool itself, it is amazing. The hardest thing for me to remember is to start up the program once a session is done since we are all tired but once I do, everyone is excited to review how the session went.

It was definitely a good purchase for myself since I love data and stats. Great job to GamingBuddhist! If you have questions or need support, he was very quick to respond and extremely helpful. Solid product from a solid content creator and I am excited to see how it will evolve in the future.
