DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS 5e Spell Tokens 2.1
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

Pros: Very nice artwork Wide variety of spells (136 images) Foundry integration (I don't use Foundry, so can't comment) Includes PNG files so you can use as you like with whatever tools you like Most are sized correctly, per 5e guidelines, such as they are.

Cons: Image resolution is 70ppi. I thought I had read they were updated to 140, but I must have misread something. That's good for Foundry or Roll20, but I use Maptool, that supports up to 350 ppi, so 70, scaled up looks pretty pixelated compared to dungeondraft (256 ppi) or commercial maps and tokens (usually 300 ppi). There are a few range, self spells that are not the extra 5 feet (Arms of Hadar is correct, Globe of Invulnerability is not, for example). This is a pretty confusing part of the rules, and since you get the PNG, not too difficult to upscale a bit, but the already poor ppi doesn't upscale well (equivalent to 56 ppi). Small gripe - the opacity is not consistent, making a bit difficult to determine what you should use ahead of time.

Overall? Well worth the 10 bucks. I would gladly purchase a higher resolution set if it was available.

pretty bland, simple encounters, forced story line without much to tie together well. railroad in, railroad out... odd. predictable. not anywhere near as interesting as temple of mysteries. you would think this chapter would be better to showcase the ptolus product line, but it feels more like an afterthought.

The Temple of Mysteries: In Media Res

Great fun! The scenario sets up pre-generated characters in a mix of intrigue and plot twists with puzzling traps, tricks and encounters. Without presenting any spoilers, please note: "In Media Res" means "in the middle of affairs" so the adventure is designed to be run as is, but that doesn't mean a creative GM couldn't come up with some alternate means to get players into the same pickle without being as extreme as the pre-gens are handled... Highly recommended as the one shot entertainment it was designed for or as a nice side trip for any campaign - with a bit of work ;-)

Will definitely run again!

Ptolus Bonus Map Pack

These are nice maps. Computer generated maps with simple black walls with textured floors and color objects. Includes untagged maps for printout or good for klooge, maptool or battle grounds, however, they include the secret doors, which is a major design flaw. Secret doors should be skipped on an untagged map. The giant S kind of might be a clue to the players.

Midnight Chronicles Package
Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
by John F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/04/2012 15:45:55

This setting is a great alternative to the usual fare. It is a dark world, cut off from all gods save one evil world-dominating power that has the peoples of Eredane living in fear. Izrador's church of shadow is the ruling power and uses orc minions to terrorize the populace into submission. Elves and dwarves are hunted while humans are enslaved. The "veil of shadow" has game impacts on magic and the oppressive society makes arms contraband.

Likes: Oppressive setting, lending to constant harassment for the players from the ruling powers. Numerous adventures rise out of "rebel" activity. New mechanics for magic that allow any player to practice some magic. Interesting new monsters and great adaptations of existing ones, especially undead and dragons. Somewhat interesting new base classes.

Dislikes: Class options are fairly limited, though they are expanded with heroic paths and a vast array of prcs. Players might tire of the restrictive setting. There's some ideas that seem a bit too familiar to other fantasy literature (Izrador to Sauron, the night kings to the nazgul, the veil and the fell remind me of the Sword of Truth).

The Movie: I really saw this as a bonus since it was only an additional $5. The movie is reasonably well produced with mediocre actors and a fairly engaging story. The ending is a bit anti-climactic but it does give you a feel for the oppressive nature of the setting and certainly measures up to other genre movies, not that that's saying much :)

Overall: A quality stand alone campaign setting, or perhaps more valuable for those who are just looking for interesting ideas to incorporate into a custom setting; Midnight includes a rich history and well laid out setting.

Power Gamer's 3.5 Wizard Strategy Guide
Publisher: Goodman Games
by John F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/19/2007 20:06:54

This is a recommended product for both beginners and veterans. For beginners, you'll find good explanations of the basics - ability scores, skill and feat selection and sound tactical advice. The division and specialization of roles discussions are excellent. For veterans, the statistical analysis will help you make more informed choices and the tips will inspire further tactical thinking. I liked this guide a bit better than the warrior guide, primarily as some of the warrior guide's statistical analysis was flawed (criticals left out of average hit and damage tables, but incorrectly included in all the weapons analysis) and had some glaring ommisions (fighting style analysis doesn't include double weapons and dwarven waraxe and bastard swords aren't included in the weapon analysis) as well as illogical initiative advice. All in all though, both books are informative, useful guides and inspire further study.
