Words can't express how good an introduction this is to DND in general and 4e specifically. It's a wonderful adventure, and has perhaps the best use of a Gelatinous Cube I've seen in a long, long time.

Want to test drive an older edition of D&D? This has everything you need to get started on 4e. A premade adventure for DMs designed for beginners, but veterens of other editions might find it useful.

I think it is a great free resource. It includes 5 pregenerated characters, quick-start 4e rules (for both players and characters), and a solid adventure. In my opinion 4e constitutes today an interesting alternative to 5e. Its different approach is valid as well, despite the fiery criticism it awoke years ago. There are some useful ideas and bold new approaches that I really like (skill challenges, powers' schema, the clear parameters for running skill checks, etc.). The social roleplaying part in this adventure may be weak to somebody's eyes, but this can be easily overcome by the DM. My only little complaint is that the adventure version is not the final one, which was uploaded at DND website. That final version included few but important changes, as Irontooth's encounter fixing, a new skill challenge, and other updates. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

The Keep on the Shadowfell was the first-ever adventure published for the D&D 4 game. We are introduced to the game world and the rules via a quick-start set of rules included with the game. Nearly everything you need to get started with the D&D 4 game is here. The adventure itself is designed to invoke memories of another keep, the Keep on the Borderlands, but here ante has been raised. The keep is not near some giant monstrous humanoid condo, but on the veil between the material plane and the mysterious Shadowfell. There is a lot more going on and it can feel very combat heavy and even a touch predictable. But that is fine for a 1st adventure. Everyone is still too busy figuring out moves and markings and surges to worry whether or not rumor X or rumor Y turns out to be true.

It is here we are introduced to the newest god of the D&D pantheon, the Raven Queen, and this adventure starts an epic quest between the forces of good and the forces of evil in the form of Orcus. Eventually, in later adventures the players will learn that Orcus is trying to steal the Raven Queen's power and become a God. So there are also, er...shadows of the Throne of Bloodstone series (1e) here and eventually Dead Gods (2e). It is also here we are re-introduced to the Shadar-kai, a humanoid race that lives in the Shadowfell and how it has changed them. It changed them a lot actually since in 3e they were elves. Here they are human. In 5e they will become elves again.

I ran this adventure using the 4e rules and then again years later converting it to 5e. It ran fantastic each time. I also wrote up a set of conversion for BECMI style D&D Basic. I have run it, but it looks like it should work well with that too. I start the characters off at 5th level for that.

If you can find a copy in print it is a fun introduction to the D&D 4 game. The PDF is free at DriveThruRPG so it only costs you a click.

Fantastic! This was my first foray into being a DM. I've been running this for 6 months via Discord as a play-by-post game. Yes, it's taken a long time...but it has been worth it. After reading through this I was able to modify it to work with 5E, as well as using some supplements to better join the next two quests to it. I removed a few rooms to help streamline the story. But all in all I strongly reccomend this adventure.

Even in 2018, this module is still very enjoyable. It is well paced and my party enjoyed it. We originally played in 4E, but dont be afraid to use in your 5E game.

This is probably my single favourite adventure module, in any system. the whole town setting is a great into to D&D for beginners, and a fun classic setting for long time players. Interesting NPCs and good "missions".

Looks like they saved the best until last. This is really well written and our players are enjoying it immensely. Slotted pretty easily in to our Eberron world setting.

I have to admit that I've only read through this adventure, and have not (Yet) had a chance to run a group of players through it. That said, I was very impressed with the product in general. It gave the necessary information to get a novice GM and a group of new unexperienced players on the right track and keep them there. The Keep part of the adventure is a standard dungeon crawl, but there are multiple opportunities to role play encounters with the nearby village inhabitants, and I was pleased to see just how varried the different encounter types were.

If I had any nitpicks, they'd be minor: A novice playing a magic user is going to be confused by terms like close burst, blast, barrier, and the like, that are used to describe his attacks. Yes, the GM's information does indicate what they mean, but it would be better if a legend or a side bar could have been provided for the mage's use so they wouldn't have to keep asking the GM how to use their own powers.

I also would have like a depiction of the Kruthic as they are the only creatures encountered that a player unfamiliar with D&D might want an explanation of, and which were not already illustrated.

The only thing wrong with it is that it is the 4th edition....... not a fan of it other than that it is fine. I am a OlD so I prefer the second edition.
